Going from bear em up gameplay to turn based gameplay worries me. Beat em up gameplay is generally more fun than typical jrpg gameplay but maybe this game pulls it off.

I was gonna dive into Cyberpunk and wait until I got a PS5 to play Yakuza, but with the most recent delay I might just reverse that.

It's apparently fun and wild. It's just a self contained story too.

I'm kinda interested in it since it has a whole new protagonist, without Kazuma being a part of it (as far as we know...he's great, though), and because it changes up the gameplay

but the only Yakuza games that I liked were the first two on the PS2 (I've played Y-Y5 & Y0), so idk.

I'm playing Zero at the moment, and while it's fun, there are many gameplay mechanics I do not like. Such as only being able to buy one item at a time, same items not stacking in your inventory, and the camera not auto rotating.

How have the Japanese videogame mags rate it?
They are super tough on games even Mario and Dragon Quest. If they give it all 9's or even one 10 then it has to be excellent.

This actually isn't the case, you can set an amount for each item you want to buy.

Famitsu gave it a 38/40, in line with its past Yakuza reviews
https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/yakuza-7-review/
Famitsu has previously favoured the Yakuza series of games. The publication awarded Yakuza 6 39/40 and gave Yakuza 5 a perfect 40/40. Famitsu has never scored a mainline instalment lower than 36/40 (Yakuza 0).

Why? Cuz it's turn-based?

I was hoping to use a guide from you after I catch up with the rest of Yakuza >_>

I'm not the most interested in it. The games always had so many fights that making them turn based seems like it is just going to completely break the flow. And no way is it as satisfying as slamming dudes into walls and stepping on faces.

This absolutely still happens. You just select from a menu instead of pressing Triangle.

But the combat leading up to it is the same select from a menu. Playing Yakuza 4 and 5 with the multiple people and combat styles was a lot of fun, turning it into a turn based RPG just seems like a weird shift that I don't necessarily want to try. I will give it a shot later on in life, because I have 0 - 6 and am only partly through 5, but I wasn't the biggest fan of this shift in the first place. Pacing being the biggest issue.

I remember hearing in an interview that some dev said that if people don't like the turn-based aspect, they'll turn it back to normal in 8 >_> Did they ever follow up on whether they're acting on that or not?

Here's an example of moment-to-moment gameplay:

https://youtu.be/eFyLdQpnDvI?t=197

Fights can go really quick if you're comfortable with the mechanics, just like in the older games. They hovered on the menus for a second just for demonstration purposes, but you can easily click through without breaking the pace all that much.

Yeah unfortunately this doesn't really seem like what I want out of a Yakuza game. Like I said, I will definitely get it down the line, because Yakuza has earned so much good faith from me (I've beaten 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2, 3 and 4 so far, with Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise also being played) so they definitely do good work. Just, to me, I want a fun, zany beat 'em up with light RPG elements and an insane Japanese soap opera drama with men in diapers.

...when I say it like that, I'm shocked even MORE people aren't playing Yakuza games.

Yakuza was always the idea of shenmue fully realized. The interactive contained open world, but with a fully fleshed out fighting system originally developed by the virtual fighter guys.
