Nintendo decides to completely cancel the airing of a Splatoon finals because some of the team names are in support of Melee. This comes off the heels of Nintendo forcing a big Melee and Ultimate tournament to shut down last week because players were using a legal method of online play for Melee, which is only happening because there may or may not be a global pandemic.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for you but Melee isnt going anywhere. The players will keep playing until the heat death of the universe. The communitys used to active stifling from Nintendo, and vitriol coming from the FGC, random internet dwellers, and other smashers alike. None of it matters, game too good.

People are blinded by hatred. Its not even about Melee at this point. Ultimate, Splatoon, ARMS, and i assume Pokemon all suffer under Nintendos thumb. But who cares because smash toxic and corporate rights. Its sad more than anything else.

let Melee die is a funny sentiment because if it werent for Nintendo playing dirty behind the scenes all these years Melee, and competitive Smash as a whole, would be far bigger. What we have today is the culmination of grassroots gamers banding together for 2 decades and saying we dont care how big and powerful your corporation is, we love your game and want nothing more than to carry the torch of joy it brings us. I think thats beautiful, but people will find a way to turn anything ugly.

Melee had like one or two people exposed in the recent rape/abuse thing that happened, and rightfully so, but to act like it was a Melee problem is just being ignorant.

It was a Smash problem as a whole, and the vast, vast majority of exposed abusers came from Ultimate, not Melee, so that part is wrong, too!

It actually started with an FGC thing too, as previously mentioned.

I think people are actually just upset about the contest rally cause this is board 8. And while rallies are still evil, I'll take some solace next time that b8 actually deserves it too.

Also punishing an entire community for the wrongdoing of certain individuals seems a little extreme. I feel like historically that has led to some pretty bad things, but I'm no historian.

Regardless, what Nintendo is doing and has done to Smash and all of their communities for the last 15+ years obviously has nothing to do with something that came to light this year. This argument is just as much about Nintendo being actually a dogshit company overall with their practices as it is about the Melee community getting shafted at every opportunity.

The same people saying "fuck melee" are probably the one's who see Nintendo release a digital game that is only purchasable until the end of March and say, "ah yes this is great I love this company".

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this is the teams coming together and saying, "wow fuck Nintendo, let's do the finals between ourselves anyway".

I saw one of the players mention it but I'm not positive it's that or just the same tournament but not sponsored by Nintendo.

Yeah this is what I was referencing. So either the top teams are pulling out of the Nintendo tournament, since Nintendo doesn't even give them any prize money, or they're still playing but then also doing this tournament on the side for awareness.
