If you're saying someone shouldn't be fired for being offensive, you're essentially saying that murder should be legal. Being fired for being offensive is a consequence to an action, no consequences for actions, murder is legal, also deadz.

You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.

I'm all for free speech, but you can't expect a respectable company to want someone who pisses off people representing them. That is just basic capitalism.

I am sure the Klan is hiring if you want to say anything on your mind in public.

It's embarrassing, really.

Jobs have codes of conduct, you agreed to not say and do certain things while hired under that company. Violation of the agreed upon terms and conditions grants them legal right to fire you.

The First Amendment pretty much exists to guarantee you that you won't be jailed for having an opinion that goes against the societal norm, nothing else.

Not even close to being the same thing. It's not a matter of somebody doing something bad and getting fired -- which has always existed -- but instead legions of trolls (predominantly leftists although you clearly have rightists as well) carrying out personal vendettas by trying to do whatever they can to get somebody fired. And many -- if not most of -- the people defending this bullshit have themselves done things which could potentially get them fired if their comments got more attention (specifically if somebody started a campaign against them).

I would say it depends on context.

I'm a lot cooler with a business firing an employee who is screaming about how the Holocaust never happened and the Jews were behind 9/11 directly at customers than I am someone getting fired for voicing the "wrong" political opinion on Twitter to random strangers on an account that doesn't even mention what their job is. There are degrees of "offensive", and there are degrees of "representing your company in a non-official capacity".

There are also degrees of time - part of the backlash to James Gunn getting fired over Tweets is that those Tweets were about a decade old, and he'd already apologized for them previously. There's a difference between saying something today and having said something 15 years ago in an entirely different social climate.

First, it's QED, not QUED.

But also, I would be perfectly fine saying that. We don't live in a world where everyone is entitled to a job as a civil right. Hell, only about half the US states even have "right to work" laws, and in most of the others (which includes most of the states you'd actually WANT to live and work in) you can generally be fired without cause.

But I would also draw the line between "not offering someone a job" or "firing someone" and "preventing someone from working entirely". There is literally nothing stopping someone fired by one company from being hired by another, save their own behavior and attitude.

It's why, after the fiasco with the two Guild Wars developers who got fired because of ridiculousness on Twitter, I'm perfectly happy to see the one who actually backed the fuck off and laid low find another job in the industry, while the one who keeps doubling down and blaming everyone else for her own batshit insanity should probably never get another job above mopping out toilets or emptying trash.

The types of people who immediately demand a person lose any and all forms of income to sustain their lives and their families' lives simply because they said something offensive online.......are the types of people who have no brain cells. They are just walking husks of humanity who should be tossed into an incinerator.

The thing SJWs like to do is make up narratives from whole cloth, claiming that so-and-so is a member of a hate group, is a Nazi, and such. Employers believe them, because why would someone go on the Internet and lie? It's like a the many false r**e accusations. Mad at a guy? Claim he assaulted you. He'll be ruined and unemployable, and you can cry crocodile tears on TV and make money from GoFundMe or something. If the truth comes out, the damage will still have been done, and if he goes to prison and is beaten to death for the false crime and wrongful conviction, oh well, it's not your problem. It was his just desserts for doing... I dunno, something, right?

No, it was a superfluous U, the E actually belongs in that Latin abbreviation you were attempting to reference to make yourself sound clever, like most people who have no idea what it stands for do.

I would agree, but you might actually want to look up the definition of the word "murder" and think about why it doesn't actually apply in this case, at all.

Some poor behaviour should be allowed, everyone has bad days for example, but there will be limits. Openly being a racist dick for example will have repercussions both on you and your employer, so the company will consider what is best for them.
