Endings Acquired: The rest of em

The final endings are, I believe, various offshoots of the canon Millennial Fair ending, though they can be quite a bit different depending on when Lavos was defeated. If you did the deed before resurrecting Crono, then the party doesn't learn about the Chrono Trigger until later, thus ending the story with everyone making a determined effort to bring back C-dog. Whether or not Magus is a part of this ending (and whether or not Frog becomes human) depends on how the party dealt with Magus in the game.

You can change the ending further by crashing the Epoch into Lavos, but I have yet to find these endings online, nor do I know how to even accomplish this in the game. Smaller changes abound as well, such as the status of Lucca's mom. From what I've seen, my favorite change is definitely the humanized Frog and Lucca's reaction to him. Such a dish!

And well... that caps off two complete playthroughs, all the side quests, and a full-n maxed out level up grind. I'd say that does it for new discoveries! All that's left for me is to rank some stuff and end with my final thoughts about the game.

This is done by simply getting in the Epoch and taking it to 1999 AD. It is definitely worth it to see this ending once.

Era Rankings

I excluded 1999 AD and The End of Time because they simply lacked enough content.

5. 2300 AD
I was told that the tech-heavy and desolate future is universally considered the worst time period, and that if I would get through it without bitter taste, the rest of the game would be a joy. Honestly, I didn't think it was that bad, but it does get topped four times over. The "dungeons" here simply aren't as fun as in other periods, the atmosphere is so depressing and I sometimes dreaded coming back, and I got stuck in those damned underground sewers. Some cool boss fights and the best grinding spot in the entire game bump it up a bit.

4. 65,000,000 BC
The game’s biggest leap in time constitutes a nice leap in quality over 2300 AD. I much prefer Ayla to Robo, and I was a lot happier with prehistoria’s brighter color palette, music, and more optimistic atmosphere. The war between humans and reptiles got pretty intense at times, but it kept me hook, unlike humanity’s awful plight in the future. Some of the bosses here, especially Azala and her big dino, also ruled. My biggest gripe with Jurassic Park here is that some of the normal baddies were on the annoying side, but overall, it’s a big winner. Just not enough to take on the top three.

3. 12,000 BC
The beautiful Kingdom of Zeal – such a wondrous sight to behold, but such a tragic end to witness. Chrono Trigger’s dichotomy of the haves and have-nots features some of the most epic moments in the game, including first setting foot on the floating kingdom, My Sacrifice by Creed, and of course, the kingdom’s splashtastic collapse. The bevy of plot revelations, some awesome fights and exploration, and a few of the game’s most memorable tracks (Corridors of Time and Schala’s Theme are two of my favorites) makes 12,000 BC something to remember.

2. 1000 AD
The present day (I like to call it the “base timeline”) earns its high placement because it does a great job introducing the player to the universe while maintaining some twists and turns later on. I love the Millennial Fair, and damn what anyone says, I’m sure I’ll still love it with repeated playthroughs. The trial and prison break are also cool, but I’m partial to Lucca and Marle’s familial side quests, both of which take place in this timeline. Marle’s is one of the most hilarious parts of the game, while Lucca’s is one of the most touching.

1. 600 AD
The war era is just a treasure trove of awesome gaming. I love the cathedral with YAKRA (yeeees) to help start things off. I love the humans/mystics war; it’s my favorite NPC conflict of the game. I love that damned Ozzie and his gut busting antics, and of course, I love everything relating to the Frog/Magus story, including Magus’s castle and recruiting the green one. Oh, and did I mention Magic Cave? Heeells yeah!

The lovable, helpful, well mannered, friendly mechanical steamroller of Chrono Trigger is my least favorite party member. Now, it's not to say that I disliked Robo (in general, I found the CT party impossible to dislike); I simply did not grow as attached to him. His character design is the only one that didn't really appeal to me. His effectiveness in combat is undeniable, but I found him too oafish and goofy looking to utilize ahead of much cooler looking characters. He is designed as a sympathetic character, but I guess I just didn't bite. He had my least favorite sidequest (he shined more as a supporting character for Lucca's development) and no fantastic lines of dialogue to set him apart. Still, he was aite. Robo Rickroll and all.

During my intro through the Millennial Fair, I really felt I'd love Marle. She was fun, she made funny quips, and the designers cultivated a good early attachment between her and Crono (and by extension, the player). I thought she might be my favorite female character. Then two things set her back: I realized she was poor in battle, and I discovered Ayla. Gameplay-wise, there seems to always be a better option than Marle. She's the weakest hitter of the game, and for a freakin' healer, her healing magic wasn't all that impressive. She was quickly upstaged by others. As a character, she was upstaged by Ayla as soon as I reached 65,000,000 BC. Honestly, why include two blonde cuties when one of them is so much cooler? Is there ANYONE out there who prefers Marle over Ayla? I wish never to meet them. Marle gets points because I used her a lot in my Level ** grind fest. Thanks for having such quick animation time on that Ice 2 spell, dollface!

The top five is where I really start to like the characters, but my feelings toward Magus shifted throughout my time with the game. As a contest staple praised for years by Board 8, Magus had s lot to live up to. The lead-up and battle against him was very fun, but the early experiences with him in my party were disappointing. Magus has no Dual Techs and little interaction with the party once he has joined. He has little synergy in battle and interaction, a stark contrast from the rest of the team, whose communication and inter-party relationships make them so great. Magus was set to finish lower on the list, but a few of the extra endings really helped him; it’s here that you see him act truly badass, both in his conversation with Frog (one ending) and his hellbent pursuit and battle with Lavos (another). Due to his quiet nature and lack of a sense of humor, I liken him to Vincent from FFVII, but I prefer Magus a lot more.

I actually loved this. Yes, it diminishes his usefulness ever so slightly, but it fits with his character: Magus is a lone wolf who prefers to do things his way, and having a bunch of Dual Techs with characters he's been fighting most of the game would seem out of place. Besides, he does have a handful of awesome Triples!

Fanfare in human form! Lucca can’t quite contend with the top three, but I consider her a wonderful character all the same. While I enjoyed both her and Marle’s humor about the same, Lucca had the intangibles to push her head. I liked her character design more, and I love her theme, which fittingly doubled as the victory fanfare. I like her quirkiness, and I actually thought she built better relationships with the rest of the cast. The relationship between Lucca and Robo is much more touching and special than the one Marle forged with Crono (I thought Marle/Crono was kinda weak, honestly). Lucca’s family sidequest also propelled her up the ranks; if you didn’t feel for her there, then buddy, something’s missing inside ya. She also had some cool looking magic. She ain’t quite YUFFIE TIER, but Lucca’s got it goin on.

Crono?! Not at the top spot?! Yep, CT’s main character is great, but not quite great enough. His character design, from the hair, to the clothes, to the fist pump victory pose, is all on point and quality. He’s also a (very fun) beast to use in battle, possessing some great Dual Techs – especially with Ayla – and one broken ass ultimate weapon. Of course, he also has some awesome defining moments, one of which has secured him a place in the bosoms of gamers worldwide. He is often compared to Link. With both being selfless, heroic, silent male swordsmen, I understand why. However, I’m not sure if such a character is wholly appropriate for his game. Link works as a silent hero because he is often a loner (apart from the throwaway fairies and guides that decide to stick around) – the lone and primary force for good in his world. He doesn’t really need to talk. In Chrono Trigger, amidst a vibrant and eclectic party, a mute just feels a bit weird. So yeah, Crono’s no Link (DUH), but he’s still the man.

2.
external image

Like with Crono and Magus before, I had big expectations for Frog, and boy, did the ribbit deliver. I knew all about the awesome design and unforgettable theme, but I didn’t know that his relationship with Magus was stewed with so much raw emotion. Their special ending is arguably the best in the game, and I think Glen carried it. I also loved his side story with Cyrus, something I didn’t even know about going in. Frog felt that he had failed his best friend, and therefore, was full of self-doubt when the party met him. By joining the party, wielding the legendary Masamune, and avenging his fallen friend, Frog grew arguably more than any of the other party members. Doubt turned to strength and a quiet confidence. I really appreciated Glen’s story throughout the game, as I did his terrible olde English and freakin’ mountain cutting scene. He might have had a chance at the top position had he been stronger in battle, but I dunno… #1 came outta nowhere and blew me away.

Wow. I was expecting great things from the beloved Chrono Trigger… but I wasn’t expecting this. Ayla (strong!) kicked my ass, stole my heart, and in the process, has become one of my favorite RPG characters ever. There’s nothing to hate here. She is the best designed party member – yeah I said it. IMO, her sprite rivals Magus as the best looking, and her awesome panther run (strong!) helps give her the edge over the wizard from Zeal. She was, without question, my favorite character to use in battle. Ayla hit like a truck, dodged like a gazelle, and stole like a ****ing raccoon from an open dumpster. A fully leveled Ayla is capable of critting for 9999 (or, if you’re extremely lucky, killing Lavos’s final form in three hits). Her Techs – whether Single or Dual – are sick. Falcon Hit and Volt Bite were probably my two favorite in the game and two reasons why I always had Ayla and Crono on board for fightin’. Never had I had such unrestrained, primal awesomeness ooze from my SNES (or Wii, as the case was).

Due to her prehistoric era and limited vernacular, I bet many fans consider Ayla boorish and unintelligent. I ask these fans to reexamine the character. Sure, she isn’t prim and proper, but if you look over her dialogue, Ayla actually imparts much wisdom throughout the game. It makes sense, as I think she’s a bit older than Crono/Ayla/Marle and holds a position of power and responsibility. Unlike Frog, Ayla is self-assured and confident from the start. I know that Crono is a courageous hero, but I honestly felt that Ayla was the party’s rock of strength. She never doubted herself or showed the slightest inkling of fear before a climactic battle. A feral beast in battle, Ayla still demonstrated feminine qualities by reassuring the other party members when the chips were down.

My only gripe rests with the designers for not giving her an optional side quest. I feel that doing so could have fleshed out an already awesome character – a missed opportunity. Still, Ayla emerges with a club, a saccharine smile, and a lion’s spirit to champion this game on her shoulders. Strong!

Final Thoughts

Actually, I don’t think there’s much left to say (the last 500 posts can attest to that). I had very high expectations for this titan of 90s Japanese gaming, but Chrono Trigger proved a richer, more enjoyable experience than I was optimistically hoping. For a game sixteen years and three console generations old, that’s quite the accomplishment.

Sure, the visuals and music are some of the best ever and the gameplay remains solid to this day, but I don’t think that’s all that makes this game special. There’s a very unique charm about it. It’s difficult to put into words, but it’s something that I don’t often see in games. You can tell that the designers were passionate about this project, that they treated the characters and locations as living, breathing things. It’s very easy to lose yourself in the world of Chrono Trigger – much more so than in the average gaming world of 2011, billion dollar budgets and lifelike graphics be damned. And that, folks, is special.

As an aside, playing through this game has reminded me I never want to see voice acting in Zelda (at least not in the near future). Some games are just better without it. Let me lose myself in this tale and give them my own voices.

I want to thank everyone for contributing with some really helpful gameplay tips and with some awesome stories and opinions. Thanks for keeping this topic afloat and making it so much fun. I’ll see you guys for Final Fantasy VI!

Glad you finally got to experience one of the most universally-beloved games of all-time, YoBlazer. Even a guy like me who hates most JRPGs is totally sucked into by its charm and craft. I've ranted about it before, but most of the thread covered that. It's a wonderful, wonderful game that I try to play at least once a year.

Behold. Everything's at the bottom of the sea. Gone is the magical kingdom of Zeal, and all the dreams and ambitions of its people. I once lived there... But I was another person then.

On the contrary! You have come far, my friend. When Magus defeated me, I thought of all those whom I had left behind. King Guardia, Queen Leene, and of course, you... Your skill and dedication is superior! I can rest now, knowing that everyone is in good hands. Good bye, my friend!
