My dad still hasn't met that neighbor (he works nights and sleeps all day, apparently). We've been assured by the other neighbor next to him that he's a really nice guy, just rarely available because of his schedule. Last time I went to the house, I think one dog was inside and the other was tied up in the backyard, so it seems like he's taking steps to keep them controlled, which is appreciated on my end.

When I first meet him, I'm just gonna be really polite and probably not even mention the dogs. Figure the best way to "win the day" is to make friends with the owner.

Great topic, wish I'd seen this earlier! CT is such a fun game. CC on the other hand... well, it has one of the best soundtracks ever. But aside from that it was a supreme disappointment. It was basically a completely separate game that they BARELY tied in to Chrono Trigger... and once they did, I really, really wished they hadn't.

I've been wondering: I know CT wasn't that huge in the US initially and gained more popularity alongside emulation. Knowing that, when did you guys first play the game, and was it on the SNES, PS1, PC, or DS?

I got it on the SNES in 95 or 96. I learned about it from my friend who had the Japanese version.

Yep, time to pack it up. SoCal has been pretty good to my family; between LA and Orange County, it's the only home we've known for our almost 20 years in this country. But my dad's company closed down (the SoCal branch, anyway), and he found a much better job in Vegas than anything he was being offered in California. I guess I could have stayed here, but life is so much cheaper in Nevada, and I'm hoping that after I save up for another year or two, I can finally get my own house. That kinda goal is really hard for a mid-20s guy to accomplish in SoCal. You know how expensive houses are in the nice parts of town.

You can definitely get some cheap houses in Las Vegas, from what I hear that was one of the places hit hardest by the housing crash. I couldn't handle the heat though (but then I'm a NorCal guy).

From my experience, the wind is worse than the heat (although I haven't lived a whole summer there). Let's hope this first summer isn't too killer.

Yeah, most locals I've met seem like friendly regular folks. I've heard that Vegas residents are naturally distant and distrusting, but the jury's still out for me. In our own neighborhood, I rarely see the neighbors out, but when I do, we always smile, wave, and strike up a little chat.

EDIT: As for our the CT, it looks like it'll be a couple more days before I can resume play. Looking forward to it, though.

Vegas residents usually are distant or distrusting to outsiders/tourists, etc., but are supposedly really friendly to other Vegas residents.

Alright, I'm back in business! I completed my second run through the Black Omen, which effectively completes my second run through the game. As I said before, everyone has reached Level **. All physical hitters have ** Power. The three big Magic users (Magus, Lucca, and Marle) are rocking ** in that stat. Everyone has ** Speed, and I now have four Haste Helms, three of which are being equipped by my starting team of Crono, Ayla, and Frog. I don't like Haste Helm on Ayla as much since it means I'll have to waste her Accessory slot to protect her status (female characters have no armor that protects status), but I'll manage. I've gotten Crono and Frog have a Magic stat of 74 apiece. I put most of my Magic Tabs in those guys; Crono functions as my 1-shot Luminaire killer when I don't feel like fighting, and Frog can heal the whole team with 2 MP. This is probably as broken as I can make my team without devoting truly ridiculous time.

Ayla doesn't crit nearly as much as I'd like, but when she does, it's fireworks. I crit'd like four teams against the various Queen fights, and that ***** didn't last very long. Ayla no give up!

I should note that of the three non-KH Square RPGs I've played (I exclude KH only because it has the fewest traditional RPG elements), Chrono Trigger is the only one I've run through twice. I still have to go back and give FFVII and X their deserved second runs. Still not sure which game I like most; all three are stellar imo.

Not much to do now than watch the remaining endings and give my final thoughts.

Ending Acquired: War Ending/Closing Scenes


This ending is seen by beating Lavos after getting the two Masamune pieces but before journeying to 65,000,000 BC. It shows various cutscenes, some new and some seen throughout the course of the game (with some tiny changes sprinkled in). I'm guessing this is one of the least exciting endings offered, but luckily, Ayla's scene steals the show and offers some delectable humor.

Heed no mind to what I just said: THIS is undoubtedly the worst ending this titan of a game has to offer. With over a dozen different ending fares, I understand that some might be less rewarding than others, but man, how hard can you phone it in lol. This ending can be seen by beating Lavos immediately after returning from 65,000,000 BC with the red stone. It features the credits interspersed with still shots of various characters from the game, with the amalgam of "meh" being scored by the music from the End of Time. Music's nice, anyway.

Ending Acquired: Frog vs. Magus


Now this... this is how you send your fans to the reset button happy. This hairy-chested, beer swilling, steak eating ending can be seen by beating Lavos after Frog joins your party with the restored Masamune, but before defeating Magus. The scene starts tranquilly enough, the victorious party having congregated at Lucca's home. Lucca is working on Robo while Crono, Marle, and Frog are just lounging around.

Suddenly, Frog departs, saying that he's "gotta take care of some business." What happened to ye olde English, frogman? The party if left pondering his intentions while the camera follows our now lone hero to... Magus's castle. Not even Lavos's defeat can quell the fires of vengeance burning within Frog, so it's time to end this. Frog makes quick work of the castle's lowlier defenders en route to the lowest dungeon and the showdown that has haunted his mind for ten years.

Frog and Magus share some awesome dialogue. Their brief conversation, a calm before the inevitable ****storm, illustrates a mutual respect between the two warriors, one forged in power and battle. Just as the first hit is struck, the screen turns to black and the credits roll, scored by Magus's theme and the climactic sounds of a fearsome battle. As the credits fade, we are treated to one final shot of the castle exterior. This time, the camera scrolls upward, and we see a cloaked figure standing atop the massive and ominous structure. While it is never revealed explicitly, one can infer rather easily that this shadowy figure is Frog, having finally vanquished his greatest foe. He stands over his new dominion, the ruler of the future.

God-tier ending. One of the best I've seen in recent memory. Will not be voting against Frog for a while. It also raised Magus's status for me.

Ending Acquired: Reptiles!


This wacky ending can be seen by defeating Lavos after beating Magus but before returning to 65,000,000 BC and defeating Azala. Since the leader of the more technologically advanced, ruthless reptiles was not vanquished in the past, the present has undergone at least one incredible change. The cutscene begins with the same intro text of Crono's mom waking up her son. When the screen fades in, however... chaos. Everyone is reptiles! Oh, the zany madness!

The ending highlights some scenes from the Millennial Fair, all of which are identical apart from every last human being replaced by a slimy bug eater. Funnily enough, the Fair's Green Jogger, who is a reptile during the normal game, is now the only human. Nice little detail there. Cheerful fair music plays in the background as the credits and scenes roll, and it ends with a classic "The End" text scroll falling atop Azala.

This ending itself is nothing to go bug-eyed over (lololo get it), but it is another example of the care and attention to detail the CT team exhibited when making this game, with all of its different possibilities and alternate realities - work so well. For 1995, it is extremely impressive.

Ending Acquired: Magus's Revenge


This ending can be seen by defeating Lavos immediately after defeating Azala (thereby preventing the Reptilian ending). The ensuing scenes highlight everyone, but the mysterious prophet (i.e. Magus) is the star. Frog is seen walking in the cathedral in 600 AD, slowly approaching a statue of Magus. The screen blackens, and he is then in the bar drinking it up, flexing his bicep, and having a good ol' time. I have no idea what any of this means.

The Crono crew are all assembled in 1000 AD and partying at the fair. It's a light and festive atmosphere, as Ayla does a drunken table dance to the delight of all. Later, they are seen lounging around Crono's home where Lucca nearly causes a fire. Nerdy tech chicks may be cute, but keep them away from the pots and pans plz. The gang is blissfully unaware that Magus is still stuck in 12000 BC and still hellbent on challenging Lavos. This sets the undertone for the entire ending, which is wrought in tension and impending doom (the whole thing, even the party scenes, are scored by Magus's theme).

Magus departs, leaving Schala and his childhood self, but not before his cat recognizes him and meows - a very nice touch. He flies frenetically through the underwater palace en route to the final battle of his life. Before meeting the alien parasite, he stops, pauses, and delivers arguably his most famous line, the one I've been waiting to hear and was bewildered as to why I had yet to hear it despite two full playthroughs:

If history is to change, let it change! If the world is to be destroyed, so be it! If my fate is to die, I must simply laugh! I'm coming, Lavos!

The mage marches toward his death, not giving the lowliest of ****s.

Ending Acquired: Girl Talk


This HI-LARIOUS ending can be seen by defeating Lavos after Schala opens the door to the underwater palace, but before powering up Marle's pendant (seriously, wtf?). An ending with a requirement this stringent should be special, and this one... kinda is, I guess. As the title suggests, it features the lively Lucca and Marle gossiping amongst themselves, exchanging snarky dialogue and rating a laundry list of the game's male characters according to their level of hunkiness. These studs include Cyrus, Kino, and Toma, among others. It is notable that this ending breaks the fourth wall.

What is most notable here, however, is that Crono ends the party by interrupting the ladies with his only lines of dialogue in the game. The whole thing is funny and cute (once again illustrating my point about the humor in Chrono Trigger's writing), but I wish Crono's lines had been not so lame.

Also wish Ayla had been included in the gossiping. Ayla strong! Laugh at puny men!
