On the same coin, yankee home game averages are roughly the same per game for the early 90s as the pirates.

It's not until Steinbrenner spends buttloads that the attendence sees an uptick.

Compare the populations.

Fairweather my ass.

I'm sorry my baseball team can't spend 300 million every year like the yankees do.

Yeah I know, it's awesome.

And look at how low attendance dipped in the early 60s when the Yankees were making 5 World Series in a row and spent money to bring in reigning MVP (and eventual home run king) Roger Maris.

Attendance numbers rise and fall across the league depending on the time period. The early 90s was the the lead-in and aftermath of a strike as well as the strike itself. Numbers dipped everywhere.

Learn stuff.

Some love for the Pirates, finally.

BTW, how is Andrew McCutchen not an All Star? He's better than Victorino and Beltran, who are all stars.

Oh yeah, because they play in frickin' Philly and New York.

I didn't say that, Revenus did.

I was about to quote your post, but it got deleted, for some reason!

But unless I misinterpreted it, you basically said "Now we see the reason the Pirates have been bad for so long. Terrible fans."

I was going to respond to Timjabs post but then I remembered theres no point talking to him.

XD are you for real?

are you still butthurt that i beat you at fifa or something?

From: Revenus | #044
And no one said this.

i thought you said you weren't gonna respond

anyway, since you can't remember saying it (even though the whole topic is about it), i'll point it out for you

See you terrible owners, people will go to games if we're winning.

Pittsburgh is a great sports town. If the owners cared AT ALL, they'd have enough attendence to support at 80-100 mil payroll, since if we were good, we'd be near full capacity every game.

basically, you said that pittsburgh fans are fairweather fans (which is true)

you said that pirates fans would come to the games if the team was good, and those ticket sales would generate enough money to be spent on keeping good young players and acquiring free agents, which would make the team good. so if fans come to the games, the team will go from bad to good. but fans will only come to the games if the team is good, and it is currently bad.

like i said, the team has been bad forever for a reason. terrible fans.

i didn't inject my opinion at all in that post

all i did was reiterate what you said because you had forgotten that you said it

when i said "like i said", i was referring to the fact that i had already told you this and you somehow forgot again

You put no opinion in that post?

You put words in my mouth and claimed it was what I said.

Pirates do poorly; draw decent number of fans. I didn't say this, but it's implied.

If the ownership *cared*, the fans would sense it, and go to more games; the ownership would then be able to afford to spend on a larger payroll. That's what I said.

what YOU claimed I said is that we have terrible fans because the team is bad. Huh?

I actually had really nice conversations with a bunch of Phillies fans, and they were all like yeah, its cool seeing the Pirates be decent, and I was like yeah it'd be cool to have the greatest rotation of modern times.

As a Cubs fan I totally sympathize with you and hope that the Pirates win the division since the Cubs are playing like they tend to do every year.

That said, the '90s Braves had a better rotation than the Phillies this year.

I was at one of the Red Sox/Cubs games this year, and some interesting reactions from Cubs fans during a discussion about Mark Cuban. Middle aged and younger fans wanted him to buy the team so bad. Older fans, like 55+, hated the idea and love the old ownership and the new, even though the new ownership has the same mentality as the old. They love it. And all I could say was... look at the Sox. They were pretty good, but you get new ownership that is desperately hungry for wins, and you'll have a team you can go nuts about. Especially in a place like Chicago, plenty of money there, and that fanbase would be nuts if they won anything.

Older Cubs fans, the ones that I met anyway, seemed happy with the "let's go Cubbies play some baseball" attitude, that just going out and trying your best year in and year out would eventually pay off.

They all left early as the Sox demolished the Cubs by 10 runs, and Mark Cuban's team won the franchise's first title a month later. Mark Cuban's approach was never to just say "well we have Dirk so that's going to sell out a lot of games". A lot of teams do that, though, and it's really brutal for fans.

Pirates ownership basically just takes money from the Sox and Yankees and pocket it. I think the mentality of the ownership/president of the club flows through the team and connects to new fans. Great owners will galvanize a fanbase.

i was absolutely hoping for Cuban to buy the franchise. It would have revitalized us.

being a boston sports fan must be wonderful.

i consider myself a pirates fan over steelers and pens tbh.

Were lookin pretty damn good this year despite being one of the most injured teams (if not the most injured) in baseball. Of course since all the mlb followers cant name players on our injury report, everyone thinks were just lucky to be so healthy or some bs.

And with taillon, allie, marte, sanchez, cain, and newly drafted first overall pick cole in our minor leagues....we might have an even better team a few years from now. Of course we need to sign mccutchen long term.
