See you terrible owners, people will go to games if we're winning.
Pittsburgh is a great sports town. If the owners cared AT ALL, they'd have enough attendence to support at 80-100 mil payroll, since if we were good, we'd be near full capacity every game.
Instead they still choose to spend as little as possible and charge 7 dollars a cup of coffee at the ski resort.
Anyways, if there are any other long-suffering Pirates fans out there; yippee.

Who says you're not perfect? Who says you're not worth it?
As an Orioles fan, I hope the winning continues. :)
The football season is a totally different story, but I can support Pittsburgh in baseball. I understand the constant feeling of futility all too well. Angelos has been running the organization almost as poorly.
Yeah, that's probably true. And the lineup is pretty good even now (especially with Reynolds and Hardy picking up), but there's way too little development of young pitching and seemingly no drive to pick up veteran pitching.
Unfortunately, another matter is that even if Angelos decided to get serious and try extremely hard to make the Orioles legitimate contenders, they now have a reputation as not being serious in getting championships. That's not very enticing to anyone.

I'd be surprised if Hardy stays with us past the deadline. His value is sky high at the moment, and we can get some much needed talent at the AA-AAA level for him.
Reynolds is playing well though.. I wish Vlad and Lee would actually do something though, and that Markakis would hit something other than singles
As a Royals fan of less than 25 years of age, I can totally relate. We had our one >.500 year in 2003, I think. I sincerely hope you guys can get one of your own!
People in pittsburgh would LOVE to have a good baseball team. Hell, people would go if the ownereship even gave one damn.
However, it is known that for the majority of the past 19 losing seasons, the Pirates have operated on a quad a level.
We recieve consistently high draft picks.
Yet, what stars can you name? The year we could have picked Wieters, we picked Daniel moskos, a reliever projected to be middle of the rotation or setup AT BEST.
We traded our stars for peanuts for years. Aramis Ramirez gets good? Cubs get him for 3 cases of soda. Jason Schmidt? 2 paperclips. Brian Giles? MEXICANS. Jason Bay? A half eaten pretezel.
Recently though, with our past 3 drafts, we've done well, paying well over slot. Huntington is a good GM considering what he has to work with.
We have a solid core in place and if our hitting could match our pitching I'd have hope for a non-collapse, but as a Pirates fan, I'm not holding my breathe.
We're bandwagoners just because we care that the team is winning? Give me a break.

You guys are set for the next 10 years with your farm system.

If my team's ownership was that f***ing inept and uncaring I would have abandoned them years ago. They're basically praying on the fact there's people like you who will put up with anything because you're so damned loyal.

We're always set for the next 10 years with our farm system. Then as soon as they prove themselves to be all-stars, our GM trades them away and counts his delicious money.

Yeah but you guys have like the best farm system in forever.
Better than the pirates had.
You'd think with the number of top 5 picks the pirates have had over the last 19 years we'd have produced SOME good players.
naaaah.

Who says you're not perfect? Who says you're not worth it?
His fandom of the Pens is ok but liking the yankees is dumb.
Also, I have a really terrible image of most philly fans, but when I was at this strip club a few weeks ago, it was the Pirates/Phillies series and a bunch of phillies fans were at the strip club (Blush btw, it's terrible, if you want to check out one go to Cheerleaders, was just there, it was awesome; the club itself is much nicer, the girls are friendlier/hotter, and it's not crowded, AND you can smoke inside)
I actually had really nice conversations with a bunch of Phillies fans, and they were all like yeah, its cool seeing the Pirates be decent, and I was like yeah it'd be cool to have the greatest rotation of modern times.

Who says you're not perfect? Who says you're not worth it?
Our farm system always has produced some gems. Johnny Damon, Jermaine Dye, Zach Grienke, Carlos Beltran, I could go on and on. Then, once they prove they can really carry the team and start asking for big money, our GM's like "no thanks, I like how rich I am" and sends them somewhere else for some more cheaper prospects that he can trade later. Though to be fair, I don't think we've seen this from Dayton Moore yet, except for Grienke, whose trade I agree with, so maybe this really is our time, but I'll wait to get excited until I actually see some results.
I don't disagree with the Greinke trade since his value is about as high as it can get and by the time your guys mature, he'll be a liabiltiy in payroll.
Dayton Moore seems like a good GM.
Although that outfield was stacked (and also a long time ago).

Who says you're not perfect? Who says you're not worth it?
Exactly. Again, if we actually start keeping these guys, I'll go back to being an actual fan, instead of one who has to kind of shut himself out from the rest of the baseball world.

cheerleaders is really nice, but a once a year kind of thing thhose girls know how to work an entire paycheck out of you.
I didn't want to go, so my friend who did paid my cover.
My other friend bought my beer, and at a certain point they both left to do something (think it was probably bathroom) and this stripper came over and started chatting me up. I was like LOL you think I'm here to pay you to tease me, you must be kidding me, I don't even have enough money to give you a dollar.

Who says you're not perfect? Who says you're not worth it?
It's amazing how excited people are in this town, when the only difference is the slight hope of some amount of success for the team.
seriously, what other city could set a professional record for futility and have everyone back on board at just the slightest sign of the team being any good?

As a Cubs fan I totally sympathize with you and hope that the Pirates win the division since the Cubs are playing like they tend to do every year.
That said, the '90s Braves had a better rotation than the Phillies this year.
From: Revenus | #042 I was going to respond to Timjabs post but then I remembered theres no point talking to him.
XD are you for real?
are you still butthurt that i beat you at fifa or something?

i thought you said you weren't gonna respond
anyway, since you can't remember saying it (even though the whole topic is about it), i'll point it out for you

basically, you said that pittsburgh fans are fairweather fans (which is true)
you said that pirates fans would come to the games if the team was good, and those ticket sales would generate enough money to be spent on keeping good young players and acquiring free agents, which would make the team good. so if fans come to the games, the team will go from bad to good. but fans will only come to the games if the team is good, and it is currently bad.
like i said, the team has been bad forever for a reason. terrible fans.
Ownership sinks team and gains huge profits while claiming they need revenue sharing, trade away all good players for next to nothing; fans are bad if they do not blindly support terrible ownership.
I'm sorry my baseball team can't spend 300 million every year like the yankees do.
