Who would win? Both are Maiar (kind of)

Gotta go with Gandalf.
I mean, Gandalf the Grey was able to combat the Necromancer (aka Sauron) and kick his ass back to Mordor, right? -- Thank you, Eddie Guerrero. http://i.neoseeker.com/n/2/nintendo_quality_seal.jpg ... Copied to Clipboard!

Okay so upon further investigation, that was with assistance.
So hmm...Gandalf the Grey just barely defeated a Balrog. I know the upgrade from Grey to White was substantial, but I'm not sure it was THAT substantial. Prophecy aside, I view him as more or less equal to the Witch-King. -- Thank you, Eddie Guerrero. http://i.neoseeker.com/n/2/nintendo_quality_seal.jpg ... Copied to Clipboard!

It's not like Balrogs are just random monsters or anything. If I'm not mistaken, they're Maiar too, defeating one is pretty damn incredible.

They are, but they're certainly well below Sauron.

I've always found it funny that Sauron in wolf form wasn't the strongest wolf in existence >_>...
Anyways, Sauron was one of the stronger Maiar as I recall. I don't think Gandalf could have beaten him. It's not like he marched to the black gate to duel with Sauron, all his hope was with Frodo. -- This is BrunomasterX, for the record. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Only person on the eastern continent in the Third Age who stands a chance against Sauron in a one-on-one fight is Tom Bombadil (while in his forest).

Actually, the reason being is because Gandalf is not allowed to openly confront Sauron, Jeffrey

Well, true enough. Tolkien never really was one to pit raw power against raw power though, so it's hard to make an objective claim of anyone's strength.
Also, race doesn't mean everything. I mean hell, an elf went toe to toe with Melkor and did some serious damage. -- This is BrunomasterX, for the record. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Race DOES matter. First off, it wasn't just some random elf who went up against Morgoth. It was the god damn High King of the Noldor, Fingolfin, who is stated as being one of the mightest Eldar of all time, the likes of which will never be seen again in Middle-earth before the Dagor Dagorath.
Secondly, by that point Morgoth was greatly diminished in power, due to the fact that he had powered much of his power into corrupting things and twisting them. The same kind of effect that happened to Sauron when he poured his power into the One Ring. Also, Elves in general were much more mightier in the First Age than they were in the Second and Third. You could make the argument that the same effect happened to Men as well, and perhaps Dwarves. Kind of a by product of Tolkien's Catholic faith, in that he believed that the Greatness of humans diminished overtime, due to the Fall of Man or whatever. -- "Don't freeze up girl, you're looking quite a sight." - Adam Ant. I don't see what Gandalf can do to deliver a finishing blow to Sauron, even if he can defeat Sauron's corporeal forms.
