The Oilers traded Cogliano to the Ducks today for a 2013 second-rounder.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TEEMU

Wild would be playing in the Central Division against the Jets, Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators, Dallas Stars and possibly the Columbus Blue Jackets.

But that's 6 teams...

Anyone up for 5 divisions?

Heck that leaves 8 teams west of the central division, assuming the Coyotes stay put.

I heard rumors of four division as well, but that would be dumb since they'd be uneven.

I've heard of the 14/16 split too (Pacific, Central, North East, South East).

The easiest way is to push the Predators over, but the Red Wings may force it for them to move meaning we'll have 5/6 divisions moving teams.

Jets to Northwest
Wild to Central
Red Wings to Northeast
Sabres to Atlantic
Flyers to Southwest

I like the Cogliano trade a lot for the Ducks. He should help our depth a good bit and add some extra scoring that is desperately missing from our incredibly top-heavy lineup. He'll look good alongside McMillan and whoever else (possibly Devante Smith-Pelly) on our third line. I guess he might be play on the second line once Blake is gone after this year too, we'll see. The good news is that Bob Murray said he isn't finished and is still looking for another depth centreman who can help out with faceoffs, a notable weakness with our team the past few years (and especially with Marchant retiring).

Selanne will likely be back. He's been skating lately to test out his knee and said that it feels fine.

I'm so happy that McGuire isn't on TSN anymore. Even though Oilers games were rarely ever on TSN, every time it was, he'd ruin it for me. TSN does show a lot of the playoffs, though. His stupid comments throughout the games are terrible. Sooo glad he's gone.

Jamie Benn aka my lord and savior. Made plenty of amazing highlight plays last season, and was a point a game player over the last 25 games or so of the season. Should really explode this season and emerge as a top power forward in the league.

If Landeskog and Duchene click, expect big numbers for the both of them. The Avs are dynamite offensively, so both could put up big numbers if the team remains healthy.

Who are some breakthrough/recovery candidates on your teams? Who should I be keeping my eye on to start the year?

David Rundblad! He finished third in the Swedish Elite League in points and he's a d-man. He's gonna end up real good, and we should get to see some signs of that early on.

I think that will end up having been a good trade, but Tarasenko sure does have a lot of potential as well. I doubt Murray would have drafted him in that position anyway, though.

I also think Bobby Butler will have a big year if he gets a bunch of top-line time again. Possibly ~25 goals. Nick Foligno too; he started off terribly last year but ended up looking decent again later on.

Should be interesting to see how Julien handles Seguin next year, he probably needs him to step up at least prior to the trade deadline. With a cup win last year, there's going to be a bit more freedom to let the kid develop. With Rex and Ryder gone, and really only Poliot back, there should be room on the third line for Seguin. Everyone else has pretty much already stepped up.

Great article. Hockey players >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The Stamkos deal looks like good value for both sides. I'm glad he didn't get one of those absurd long-term deals worth a bazillion dollars. Still a few big RFAs left to be signed - Weber, Parise, Doughty.

Who are some breakthrough/recovery candidates on your teams? Who should I be keeping my eye on to start the year?

Lots of Ducks had breakout/career years this past season for Anaheim so I wouldn't expect anything too major next year. I don't think Perry will repeat his numbers, but a 40/40 season sounds about right. Getzlaf should hit the 90 point mark if he can stay healthy. Ryan continues to improve his all-around game, but won't be able to put up the 40+ goals he is capable of until he starts playing on our first PP unit, which won't happen next season unless Selanne retires. Our second line is just getting older and less productive (except for the ageless Teemu Selanne of course). Our third line might surprise some people if McMillan, Cogliano, and hopefully DSP can click. They would be a fun, young line to watch. On defense Vis obviously was the man last year, he and Lydman work so well together. They were both hampered by serious shoulders injuries down the stretch and into the playoffs yet still managed to put up excellent numbers (Vis on the offense and Lydman on the defense of course). Most Ducks fans and Randy Carlyle aren't expecting a huge leap forward for Fowler this year, if he can "simply" repeat what he did last year (you know, score 10 goals and 40 points as a 18/19 year old) while improving his defensive game then I'll be quite pleased. He's a very smart player and solid in his own end, but he had horrible defensive partners last year (Lilja and Sutton aka turnover machine and pylon) so his +/- was dreadful. Sbisa and Beachemin looked great together at the end of last year and will add a physical edge that has been missing from our back end since the departure of Pronger. Sbisa is seriously the man, dude just punishes guys left and right. Excellent skater too...can't wait to see him and Folwer anchor our top pairing down the road.

So yeah, I'm not sure anyone will break out next year from the Ducks because many are coming off great seasons (Hiller included). Maybe look out for someone like Etem or DSP if they make the team.

He could replace Blake yeah, but our second line clicks really well so I'm not sure it will be broken up next season. Besides, the entire line will likely be gone after this season (except for maybe Saku who might drop to our #3 centre) so Cogs will have his chance then.
