I've looked at the actual wording for what Nomura says and the sentence in question literally means "preparing to enter mass/full production." What this means is that the game is getting ready to go into beta, or the final phase of development. Speaking with some people who actually know about game development, they also agree that this is the case AND the developers for Final Fantasy XIII said the exact same thing before they also went into beta. "
It seems between NeoGAF and a bunch of other folks getting involved that this was probably quite the little mistranslation and that the game's development is moving along better than yesterday's article made it sound. That said, my $0.2 is that it's still chugging along like a damn tortoise but at least this isn't quite as ridiculous.

This game was announced May 2006. The entirety of World War I took less time -- significantly less time -- than the development of this game just to reach beta.

Is it fair to say that FFXIII's production is assassinated at this point and the production team is fighting viciously in the name of their fallen leader?

Looking forward to it, though. I've been interested in the game since it was announced, and it always looked like the better game of the two between it and FFXIII. Love the modern setting inspired by real world locations.
I've been more interested in Versus from the beginning as well, mostly because the KH team is working on it. I love KH's battle system. The more games I can play that have it, the better.
VS XIII's always been super appealing to me. The KH team seems to be the only group in Square still capable of pumping out anything of quality, so I'm greatly looking forward to this!
I thought KH2's battle system was alright. I've always hoped they would make it more Final Fantasy, add a little more depth to it than what's in KH. An action-based battle system is certainly more appealing than the sort of in between that FFXIII had, at least. I think an action battle system meshes well with what Final Fantasy is today.

I enjoy KH's sorta hack-and-slash style, even if it's not necessarily deep. Plus, I love the flair. Fighting looks good and feels good, at least to me. The more involved I feel in a battle, the better.

Heh, that got me thinking for a moment. What if they blew us away with yet another confounding-as-hell business strategy by pulling the "Final Fantasy" out of the game's title altogether near release and claimed it was always their plan?

we literally started a new generation of gaming in the timespan this game has been in development (DS started this gen, 3DS is the start of the 'next' gen). hell, the Wii U probably launches first too.

eh, records are made to be broken, I want to see another game fall into DNF level development hell. **** after the past 10 years it would finally make a square game actually worth buying if only for the novelty of owning the game that somehow got delayed longer than duke
there was five minutes of gameplay shown. that's not "pre-production" and I think everyone knew it. they just like piling on Versus because the game has become a joke.
the way Square does things is weird. they focus all their power on one project at a time. FF13-2 cut in line and Versus is suffering as a result.
