0-10 lets 5 be a true middle, whereas for 1-10, it's not the median even if it feels like it should be.

This is a pretty simple misconception to fix if it bothers you. If x is a rating on 1-10, then take (10/9)(x - 1) to be its 'real' rating.

Because some silly people like to claim that 10/10 represents perfection and is therefore unattainable, the scale should be 0-9

But that just looks stupid so we shift everything up by 1 and use 1-10

If you agree that 5 is average, then this should be how it is. See how there are equal amounts of numbers on either side?

But if you rate them on an academic scale, where 7 is average and 5 is failing, then you don't need to.

0-10 does make a lot of sense, but...
