The gameplay is quite good! People who bash Other M tend to do so on the grounds that it takes a dump on their preconceptions of what Samus was supposed to be. Samus was previously regarded as probably the most important feminist icon in the gaming industry, it had nothing to do with the actual game but peoples interpretations of a character who nearly never uttered a word...

I'm not really arguing that it's a great game or anything. This just bothers me because b8 acts so misogynistic and loves the stereotypical alpha male domineering a weak minded female stuff, but then ****s on Other M for having Samus fill that role. What gives?

Well my post could also imply his alleged trolling is new and brought my attention to his username!

I really can't remember most people unless they make a lot of contributions or I have fairly long discussions/debates with then.

I don't understand how this topic could be perceived as trolling, there's -much- more provocative things I could post if all I wanted to do was get under peoples skin. Metroid isn't even that popular a franchise, I think most people will see this topic and think "who cares".

Uh, the whole alpha/beta thing was a pretty provocative topic a while back, and then LMS reached a whole new level of annoying recently with his OoT stuff, and the Other M stuff seemed to be a throwback to that.

Well whatevs, carry on.

I think Other M sucked too, but it was because of gameplay, not story. But so were Fusion and Corruption before it.

I'm not a big fan of Corruption but I'd hardly say it sucked, I think Metroid has been pretty consistent. It's unfortunate that Other M was received so poorly, Nintendo is probably going to shelf the series for a long time like they're doing with Star Fox and F-Zero D:

Nothing, the Prime games are all very close in quality though everyone has their preferences.

If the Prime games look similar to you, it's just because their engines are the same.
Same as if Super Metroid had two direct sequels on the SNES and they all used the same sprites and tiles.

However, underneath that they are vastly different.
Prime 1 is Super Metroid in 3D form.

Corruption is Fusion in 3D form. With that I mean linear as hell and easy (puzzle). No wonder though, it's Wii game. Gotta make it accessible!

Let's not misinform Jeff Zero, people! Don't lead Jeff Zero astray!

I appreciate the second opinion, pj. Of course what I really need to do is get these games and find out for myself. I've got such a tremendous backlog though...

Other M has its moments where it's legitimately great. story isn't really the problem so much as design choices. it's still legitimately good though.

Okay, what? Most "alpha/beta" discussions are tongue-in-cheek, and those rare times when they are serious, it's usually about how to get girls. Other M is an entirely different story, as it degrades what was once a strong female lead into a whiny, dependent cliche.

anyways environments weren't so bad - I mean it was like Fusion in that it was all on a ship, but they made the sectors wayyy more environmental than Fusion did, what with holographic scenery and such

This is true. For whatever reason, there's an inverse relation between the quality of Metroid games and the quality of the bosses.

Eh I thought Super Metroid had the best boss battles of the franchise! Although maybe I'm only thinking of Ridley.

It's weird to think, but MOM actually felt oddly nostalgic to me - not for anything video game related, however, as I recently found out, but for the days when I used to watch Discovery Kids and particularly await new episodes of Flight 29 Down (a teen drama series) and Time Warp Trio (a cartoon series where three boys from the present and three girls from the future travel throughout history, though all six of them are rarely present in any one episode, and usually it's just three people heading one) - in particular there was an episode of the latter show where all three "protagonists" were seemingly faced with death (not death threats, death right there on the spot - one for throwing a rock at the Statue of Zeus in order to retrieve the book that the group uses for time travel, one for being a girl participating in the Olympics, and one for failing to pay for his meals at a futuristic diner located on the edge of space), and the cutscene where Adam leaves reminded me of that somehow. I think I enjoy seeing "heroes" getting threatened for whatever reason - or at least that's what I find most memorable.

I could speak for a long while about how I felt the game's quality might've been inflated for multiple reasons, but aside from what I mentioned I'm not going to talk about any of them unless you guys ask. I'll mention right now that I got MOM with an army of wildlife documentaries, though.

Fun fact: This is because he was supposed to die about halfway through Zero Mission. If you read the manga, near the end it shows Adam stalling Ridley while Samus is on her mission on Zebes. Few pages later, Ridley attacks Samus. A few pages after that, when Samus thinks about all of her allies, Adam is grouped in with the dead characters (for example her parents). It's never outright stated that he died, but it's heavily, heavily implied.

They brought Adam back for Other M, then at the end they were like, "oh ****! oh ****! This contradicts Fusion, quick have Adam sacrifice himself."
