My Score 7.8 - The original Star Ocean which I played in the late 2000s failed to grasp my attention. Maybe I didn't take the game seriously enough to call it a great. The game however isn't anywhere near bad and infact it got much better during the end. Wouldn't wanna play the game again maybe ever but I remember I had some fun with it on my playthrough.

Star Ocean (im assuming were talking about the second story) is a solid 8.5/10. Fun game
Observe the topic more carefully. If I meant the second story the title would have been "Rate this RPG (Day 21) - Star Ocean: The Second Story or Star Ocean 2"
I even stated the one we're rating here is the original Star Ocean in my first post. Yeah Star Ocean on the Super Nintendo to be very specific not the one on PS1 or PS2 or X360. Thats 2, 3 and 4
So assuming you've rated the 2nd Star Ocean game, I will not be counting your score. Unless you rate the 1st game in another post.

-Best graphics for an RPG on the system -Phenomenal gameplay -Great variety of characters -Complex character growth system -Long game with tons to do -A story that's functional and compelling, but doesn't get in the way of the gameplay (a la Star Ocean 2)
This is an easy perfect score for me. 10/10.

Forgive me for being skeptical about your history with SO1, because almost none of it takes place in space. Like, there's nothing wrong with just *not voting* if you haven't played the game!

I'm sure I'd be rating SO1 higher if I had played it before 2. But when a game is inferior in every way to a sequel and you play the sequel first, it kinda takes a hit or two.

Maybe... but even were this the case, I don't believe that means you can't award both games a high score. Take Mother for the NES as an example: while it's completely outclassed by EarthBound in every conceivable way, it's still a B+/A- game!

I had some decent fun the first time, but the story was almost impossible to follow near the end. Battles feel a lot more stat/level driven than skill driven. Couldn't finish it a second time. I did play it before Star Ocean 2.

I dunno about that. Mother was pretty terrible in just about every area other than "being charming". You have to spend a stupid amount of time grinding; the difficulty is incredibly poorly balanced and often jumps up wildly without warning, and your party members joining at level 1 after you've just been forced to grind to survive the last area makes it worse. The plot progression feels really random at times, as do your party members' motivations.
