You step into the skyscraper's lobby, slightly awed by the aura of power and richness that exudes from the building, all steel and glass. Turns out that the address was actually an office building, belonging to Hallcroft, Turing, and Lotwyver, specialized in "Outsiders, Strangers, and Matters of Arcane Complexity". Unsure of where you might find the man, you approach the reception desk, manned by two pretty young ladies, both of them boasting long, dark hair and brown eyes. Indeed, the resemblance between them is so uncanny you wonder if they might not be sisters.

"Welcome to H., T., and L. Inc. What matters bring you here?"

In response, you produce the card and put it down on the desk. You're about to give her a description of the man in the red coat, but she cuts you off. "Oh, so you're the one Mr. L wanted to see! Take the elevator to the top floor. He's been waiting for you for quite some time." Waiting for you, this early? You glance at your watch and see that it is only barely past eight o' clock. Talk about an early bird. You thank the receptionist and call the elevator. A little later, you find yourself in front of a door marked "P. Lotwyver, Senior Partner.". Knocking on it, you hear a familiar voice say "Come in!".

The room beyond the door is well furnished and comfortable, a far cry from the coldness of the lobby and façade, with a red carpet covering the floor and wooden furniture. Behind a large desk, the man in the red coat welcomes you in with a broad smile.

"And here you are. I have been anxiously awaiting your arrival, young man. Please, have a seat." He says, pointing at the ornately decorated chair in front of the desk. As you do so, he opens a drawer and takes out a small book with no title on the cover.

"I'm sure you have many questions about yesterday's events, and I'll be delighted to shed some light on them."

11) "What is it you wish to know about, young man?"
A) "Who are you? Why did you tell me to come here?"
B) "What was that armor that tried to kill me? And why did it go after me?"
C) "What's up with the Sprite? Its eyes changed color yesterday, when I got home."
D) "What was that voice? Why did it offer me power, and where did it come from?"

It is unlikely that it will evolve into an Imperialdramon or Arceus level beast, I can say that much.

Of course, unlikely does not mean impossible.

(Yes, this is a tease while I work on the update. Coming up soonish, stay tuned.)

Mr. Lotwyver nods, an understanding look on his face. "Straight to the point, eh? Perfectly reasonable, given your position. You're confused, unsure of what is going on, maybe even afraid - and here you are, talking to a man who might be able to shed some light into this matter." Turning his velvet chair around, he stands up and walks over to the window behind him, which covers the whole wall and provides a magnificent view of the city, still poorly lit by the sun that is only beginning to rise.

"The creature you did battle with, that armor...being like it bear many names. Ghasts, Spirits, Killer Dreams...all of those name suit them, but at heart, what they are is Summons, brought to this world by a human with a special talent for reaching out to the supernatural, in one way or another." Mr. Lotwyver glances back at you. "That particular summon was a Dullahan, the soul of a soldier who died on a battlefield while burdened by regrets, encased into a piece of war equipment. They are vicious creatures, as they borrow the skills the soul possessed during life and amplify them many times. Several Dullahans have been responsible for the butchering of whole towns and villages over the years." You can see that his face looks grim on the window's reflection as he explains this all to you.

"As for who sent it at you...ah, that is the million dollar question. Given what you told me, it appears that you had not yet awoken to your special powers when you were buffeted by that wind, or attacked by the Dullahan. Unless you were lying to me..." Mr. Lotwyver's tone makes it clear that he does not believe such a thing to be possible. "...That was an unprovoked attack. In other words, the magician who targeted you wanted to kill you for who you are, not for your powers, unless..." He pauses for a moment then continues. "...Well, I've got a few ideas about other motives. In any case, whatever the Summoner's motives might have been, you are part of a very select group now, my friend. The number of people capable of reaching out to the supernatural is vanishingly small. Out of the billions who inhabit this planet, the combined total of Pages and Knights couldn't possibly exceed a hundred thousand, and the Pages far outnumber the Knights and are unlikely to awaken to their powers. Now, where was I...oh, yes. That."

Mr. Lotwyver turns around and walks past the desk, until he's standing next to you. "A Knight is like a beacon that is constantly active, broadcasting a signal of supernatural power to all other practitioners...and things...in the area. You're in mortal danger now, my friend, as whoever wanted you dead is unlikely to forget about you so easily just because you've dispatched its Summon. Out of curiosity, do you have a job at the moment?" Befuddled by the random question, you shake your head. "Good. In that case, would you be interested in joining me here at HT&L Inc.? I'm in charge of an agency that deals with supernatural matters, both monsters and practitioners such as you. We deal with threats, secure latent practitioners to train and nurture into responsible people, and occasionally, engage in some pro bono work on the side, just to keep our conscience clean and keep the normal world turning. The pay is good, and while the risks are tremendous to say the least, they will be no matter what you choose to do with your life from now on. You've dived into a very murky pool, my friend, and its fishes have been disturbed. They will not leave you alone if you choose not to move, but will instead devour you bit by bit."

12) "So, my young friend, what say you?"
A) Accept Mr. Lotwyver's offer.
B) Decline the offer.
C) Other.

I'll vote with that. Perhaps add on a question of what happens if we deny him? Like what other choices do we have? It doesn't seem like they would want strays running around, but there could be a competitor company out there looking to recruit.

The barrage of helpfulness is slightly overwhelming.

Not telling, you'll have to find out for yourselves~

On that note, I wish to clarify that, barring countervotes limiting the detail on a choice, expansions will be followed unless something stops them from taking effect/happening.

You're tempted by Mr. Lotwyver's offer for a moment. It seems very good...almost *too* good to be true. And when something seems too good to be true, it usually is a fraud. You explain to him that you wish to consider other options. What would happen if you said 'no', for instance?

"Ah. You're worried about a setup, I take. I can understand that, yes...well, if you declined my offer, nothing would happen, or at least nothing concerning me and my employees. I place considerable value on free will, and as long as you made a solemn vow not to use your talents for illicit purposes, you will never hear from me or my people again." Going back to his chair, Mr. Lotwyver begins to fiddle with a pendulum with a frame like a compass.

"Of course, this doesn't mean you will be free of this new world you've stumbled upon. Somebody is still out to get you, and power begets power. Creatures and men will come seeking that power, and you may find yourself in some very tight spots trying to deal with them." He concludes, as he sets the pendulum into motion.

So, if Mr. Lotwyver isn't deceiving you, you don't have a way to escape this...underground. And in truth, you're not entirely sure you want out just yet - you still don't know who wishes you ill, and many questions about the nature of this hidden world remain unanswered. You certainly could use a little guidance, but is Mr. Lotwyver the person you should trust? What sort of work would you have to do for him, and for what reasons?

"I see...hm, tell you what, my friend: what if I take you to meet your potential fellow staff members and you see for yourself what kind of organization this is?" Hopping off his chair again, Mr. Lotwyver heads for the door and beckons you to follow. He leads you back to the elevator, and once you are inside, he presses a button labeled B2. The elevator begins to slide downward quietly...

...You step off the elevator into what looks like a cozy home. This room too is decorated in a far more lively and warm fashion than the lobby, with fuzzy carpets and curtains everywhere. It's a little suffocating, but alluring all the same. The room is populated by three people: one of them is a young woman in her 20s, with hazel eyes and auburn hair, and the other two are men, one of them about the same age as the woman, the other one looking like he's in his mid-30s. The second man is clad in a police uniform, and is busy playing cards by his lonesome on a little table in the middle of the room. The first man is sitting quite still for the woman, who is busy painting a portrait of him. At the moment, she is trying to recapture his face, a kind, slim one with golden hair and blue eyes. As the doors open, all three turn their eyes to the door, tensing up as they see Mr. Lotwyver. They relax once they catch sight of you, however, and return to their previous occupations with the exception of the woman.

"Mr. L, nice to see you. Got a mission for us or something?"

Mr. Lotwyver wags a finger. "Close, but not quite. Lady and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce you to this remarkable young man. He's a potential new agent of the company who wanted to see what the work might be like, and I figured you were the ones best prepared to introduce him to it."

The air seems to stiffen as everybody looks at you again under a new light. "Show him the work? Mr. L, isn't he a little young for this sort of thing?" The man in the police uniform asks, surprised.

"Absolutely not, Fallon. He's a fully awoken Knight, and has already dealt with an outbreak. He took care of a Dullahan by himself moments after awakening and didn't even have to spend more than a few hours in the hospital recovering from that ordeal!" Mr. Lotwyver says, puffing his chest proudly as he introduces the group to your achievement. They all blink, shocked.

"Hold on, you're saying this guy took out a super-skilled supernatural soldier alone? Without training?" The woman asks, befuddled.

"Right on the mark, my dear rookie painter, as usual. Well, I must be going, I have lots of things that require my immediate attention. It seems you're aware of how handy another partner would be, so I will not stress that further. He waves at you. "Have fun!"

You scramble to get to the elevator in time, before its doors close, but it is much too fast for you. With a beaitific smile, Mr. Lotwyver disappears and you soon hear the elevator head upwards. Frustrated, you turn around and catch sight of the three occupants talking about something. You manage to hear bits and pieces, such as "...crazy as a cuckoo", and "...let him know who we are first.". A little later, the three approach you, and the golden-haired man extends you a hand, which you take after a moment. He gives you a firm handshake.

"Welcome to HT&L's occult squadron. I'm Godric, that's Fallon, and this is Henrietta." He introduces the team to you. "Sorry for being left like that - Mr. L has a very quirky sense of humor and he occasionally makes some pretty strange decisions."

"Let's cut straight to the chase, shall we? If you want to understand our methods, the best thing you can do is take a tour of our base." Fallon butts in, giving you no respite.

"We call it the Impregnable." Henrietta interrumps, glancing around to soak the scene in, before continuing. "Don't be fooled by the size of this room, this place is bigger than a footbal field, easily. Anyway...as a part of the occult squadron, each of us has an area of expertise, as well as our abilities as Knights. I maintain the training course, Fallon takes care of the forge, and Godric keeps an eye on the musty old tomes we use to inform ourselves about the creatures we might face. We can take you to our workstations and leave you to get a feel for the type of things we use them for. Whatcha say?"

13) Who will you take as your guide through the Impregnable?
A) Go with Henrietta to the training course.
B) Ask Fallon to take you to the forge.
C) Visit the library with Godric.

These people seem friendly enough that you feel at ease with them, in spite of their somewhat abrupt manners. Still, you came down here for a reason, and you need to keep your eyes on the prize. Maybe you can find more information about what is happening in their library? After a moment's consideration, you decide to go with Godric.

"Ah, another scholar. That's great, talking to these two is like trying to converse with the walls." Godric smiles, betraying the seeming seriousness of his tone. At this, Henrietta rolls her eyes. "You'll never grow up, will you?" She asks, a question that gets no response as the blond man leads you to a door on the far side of the room. Beyond it is a corridor with several doors to the left and a single door to the right. Without hesitating, Godric leads you past the door on the right...and into a *huge* library. It's colossal, with rows and rows of bookshelves taller than you are, enough of them to leave your house's whole ground floor green with envy. Godric modestly glances elsewhere.

"Like it? The group's got a pretty long history, you know. Lots of events have happened over the years, and we've found a bunch of grimoires and librams, either tucked away in small antique shops nobody ever paid attention to or taken from rogue practitioners when we had to put them down. Now, the way I've organized them is simple...from this bookshelf to the fourth one you've got the thaumaturgic manuals, from the fifth to the ninth you have the bestiaries, ten to twelve is the diaries and journals of the squad members, thirteen to twenty is the memoirs of the practitioners we hunted down, and the other shelves are assorted books either waiting for classification or that doesn't fit anywhere else. If you want to me to look for a book for you, give me a holler. I'll be working on the unsorted books if you need me."

14) Godric has left you alone for the moment within the Impregnable's library. What will you do?

Look for journal of Mr. Lotniofuwenvgwekjf (you know who I mean). If not easily accessible, look in memoirs of hunted down practitioners. See what they did to be hunted down, and how it was done. Cruelly? Simply? Dangerously? Other groups involved other than the individual hunted down?

... There's eight shelves full of those memoirs. Searching through Mr. L's journal I'm all for, but without some idea of what we're looking for, the memoirs seem like a fool's errand. We could randomly look at one or two, but I don't think that'd give us anything useful.

Also they're memoirs.

I somehow doubt that the authors had time to describe their own deaths >_>

Yes, but they show from their perspective what they're running for and from. Also, while it won't say, "This is how I died," it could say, "So far these devious bastards have done some really terrible things in the effort to catch me."

We're trying to find out the true motive behind these people, right? Bestiaries and Thaumaturgic don't help us there, unless we're perhaps researching for the purpose of surviving on our own. That leaves squad member journals, which are going to be biased in their favor, or hunted down people, which are also going to be biased, but will be the only thing to give us a clue as to the other side. We could also take a dive into a random 'extra' book, where the more nasty dirty stuff is likely to be hiding, but that is needle in a haystack type of venture.

Perhaps ask Godric who gave them the most trouble, and then look through that person's memoir. That would surely lead to text on the company itself, if we're assured not to pick up a memoir of an easy case.

But that's a backup if we can't find Mr. L's journal.

Or at least my vote.

If we want to find these people's true motives, it seems best to search a library they don't own. Especially since, even if these memoirs do contain anything interesting, all we've accomplished is the replacement of one biased source with another.

And it may be the only chance we get to view anything that isn't biased toward them. Everything else we see in making this decision is going to be sugarcoated in L's favor, because we're in his Impregnable place. If the memoirs of some big rebel are also sugarcoated, then obviously something is being hidden. Upon entering the room, we got the hint that maybe our 'fellow staff members' are just a little bit afraid of L, given how they stiffened up, then put on relaxed airs when they realized someone new was in the room. Finding more secrecy is just as telling as finding something incriminating.

I dunno, mang, it's just what I thought up right when I saw it. What's your proposed action?

Mine?

What I really want to do is go back in time, save that SP (thought it was just mp whoops >_>), and use it to bend reality to immediately get the information most useful to us.

But failing that:

Primary: Find L's Journal
Secondary: Find data on Sprite.

Minor nitpick but at the beginning of each post can you specify which choice won? Don't feel like reading all the posts to find out.

I figured I explained it enough for you to get my vote, but for clarification, that's what I'm going for.

Might as well do it. Thanks for the suggestion!

A) Free Choice: Find Lotwyver's Journal.

Hmm...so the squad members have kept journals over the years? Maybe you can find something on Mr. Lotwyver this way. Following Godric's instructions, you head for the tenth bookshelf, and begin looking through it for a journal. This turns out to be harder than you expected, because many of the journals are unmarked and the bookshelf is double-layered, the first book obscuring the second one. Thankfully, they are all organized alphabetically, drastically reducing the amount of work you are forced to engage in. Still, tracking down a journal is no easy task, and it takes you more than an hour before something written by Lotwyver turns up...and even so, it is not a journal, merely a log of events, written in a very dry, professional fashion. The entries read as follows:

1992, 7th of Jann
Awoke to powers. Became minor partner of HT&L, as well as previous administrative functions. Celebrating later today with family.

1994, 22nd of N
Last Knight convinced to work for us. Make sure to install a music room for him on the basement.

1995, 3rd of Jann
All five rogues rounded up. Remember to give squadron a raise. Remember to visit Patience while recovering to cheer up.

1995, 17th of Mar
Two Knights down. Must look for replacements. Remember to attend to their wedding.

And on and on, covering two decades of management. Strangely, there isn't a single instance of events pertaining to Mr. Lotwyver, such as birthdays or anniversaries, only those involving the squad members, which seem to be called Knights. Odd symbols appear marked next to the dates. Some of them are easy to understand, like an intricate drawing of a flame. Some are much harder to decipher, like what looks like cuneiform scripture. Time flies, as you immerse yourself in the lecture of the journal, until you hear Godric's voice:

"Hey, you alright there? I'm done with my work. If you're still looking for something just let me know and I'll see if I can find it for you."

15) What will you do in reaction to Godric's words?
A) Ignore him. Continue to search for another journal by Lotwyver, ideally a more complete one.
B) Ask him for help in finding more information on your potential employer.
C) Ask him for help in finding more information about a different subject. [Please specify]
D) Other.
