Dowolf, you would have to give an action for context. Like, if we're fighting, but there is a chandelier above us, I'm fairly sure we could use a context action to try and bring down the chandelier. It's not like there's just one context action per scenario.

So, since yours is incomplete, seeing as how I don't see a viable context action until we know what that mechanism is...

MC: Relentless Resolve to Pod 2
Lluvia: Blood Link
Nina: Attack Pod 2

Could you explain Highway Robbery a little? It says it doesn't consume turn's action? The way I interpret that is that we could set up a counter, AND attack as well.

All the same I don't think we should really set that up right now, but that's just me.

But hoping for magic GM love is kinda dull, so... let's go with what Dumey said.

While specifying Context moves is possible, the actual basic move is indeed in fact "Context Action" and throwing the ball back at me. In other words, the Context Action allows you to do one of two things:

A) Do improvised attack/defense moves without having to use a billion preset commands.
B) Tells the GM to make something up as your action.

Since I understand that this new element is a bit weird, I'm extending the deadline for moves a little so more discussion can be held.

EDIT: And that is indeed how Highway Robbery works. An action with a counter would be written down like this:

Nina: Fulminant Flare + Highway Robbery

And then the first attack to hit Nina on the next turn would have its damage bounced back to the attacker.

Also, need to specify how many rounds of RR you're unloading on the target. You can throw less than the maximum.

Oh well then. That's cool.

Does the counter only last for the one turn? Like if we use HR, Nina doesn't get hit at all, and then gets hit the next turn, is it still active?

This is probably going to be a long fight, with that 400 hp mob, so we definitely need a Blood Link set up. At the same time I'm really hoping that we can knock out the pod this turn, so I would say all three RR shots? I'm too lazy to actually do the math to figure that out.

So someone else should decide that, otherwise I say throw maximum to ensure we take out an enemy. Maybe with all the multiple shot potential we'll unlock a combo move between MC and Nina.

One attack. Highway Robbery burns 8 MP per attack, so while setting up multiple counters IS possible you'd need to clarify that in advance.

Seeing the plant briefly grow immobile, you strike. Cuts appear over the gun battery your allies have been hammering, while Nina continues to throw dart after dart into it. You slice half of it off...

[Hopelessness Theme 1, All Hell Rains Down:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

...And then the world explodes, as a massive ball of fire surrounds you and you hear the sound of machineguns flaring up. The heat is incredible, and you can feel your flesh begin to burn as you're knocked back through the door and into the row of lockers in the hall. You struggle to stand, but it feels as though every last nerve in your body is dying. Nina's agonic cry still rings in your ears as she lands next to you, her clothes ablaze, horrific burns covering the left side of her body. She stares at you blankly, while a piteous, low moan escapes her singed lips. In front of you, Lluvia slumps down on one knee, her body a bloody red and just a vague, broken outline. You struggle to remain conscious, aware of the fact you're still a target for the flower, but it's so hard...maybe you should close your eyes and go to sleep...

Not 100% sure I can do this but here it goes.

MC: Relentless Resolve to Pod 2 until dead, then on Pod 1 (three attacks)
Lluvia: Soothing Rain
Nina: Attack Pod 1

And this Context thing makes my focus combo even better. Highway Robbery + Context: Protect MC.

Ni. I do not believe in foisting unwinnable scenarios on my readers/players/storybros. If a fight is unwinnable, it will be because of choices you made and will not fail to progress the story. Otherwise fights are always winnable and consequences only come from of losing or bombing the fight objectives.

EDIT: Which is to say, if I hit you with an unwinnable boss fight/mook fight, it will be super clear from a narrative perspective because you'll know you're dealing with a heavyweight. That is all I can say on this matter.

No.

You are not going to lie down and die. You are not going to gaze upon your impending doom and simply stare blankly as it sends you to meet your maker. Your back hurts from having been smashed against cold metal, and you wouldn't mind writing in pain for a little while, but this thing hurt you. It hurt the girl who trusted you enough to follow you into this battle. It hurt Lluvia, who's responsible for you not being dead already. It's not even a man with a grudge. It is just a thing, a tool controlled by a murderous mind. It's laughable. This pathetic creature won't finish you off.

It.

Is going.

DOWN.

You rise up, and brandish Stormscraper. You prepare to strike, to finish off that living gun, but before you can, it discorporates into dust. So great is your rage, that you need not make an attack, as a burst of gunfire causes the walls to crumble and you erase several of the second battery's guns as soon as it shows its face. The flower reels, perhaps due to the potency of your onslaught, perhaps because of fear or awe. You honestly don't care. All that matters is that your school has been invaded, those who've tried to help you have been hurt, and there is a plant that needs to be pruned.

Emboldened by your display, Lluvia manages to stand up, wobbling. She dissipates into a cloud of shining water particles, which fly upwards. At the same time, Nina's burnt skin lights up, a pink fire covering them while she continues to cry, softly. The rain falls upon her and extinguishes the fires, leaving red, but smooth skin behind. Her eyes come sharply back to focus and she stares at you, then at the flower. Then, tears well up in her eyes and fear makes her pupils waver. It looks like she's about to break down...

...No. None of that. You'd like nothing more than to see everybody safe and sound, including her, but now is not the time to cry. Gently, but firmly, you grab her hand and pull her back up to her feet. She looks at you again, and you stare back. She nods, and the pink fire returns...but this time, within her anger-filled eyes, while the tears evaporate.

"Alright." She says, her voice a little weak, but determined nonetheless. She takes a deep breath and lets another dart fly. It silences another one of the guns, leaving only a few left. Lluvia lands beside you, still full of holes, but now back to her usual color. It's not over yet.

[MC's HP remaining: 68/75]
[Lluvia's HP remaining: 37/60]
[Nina's HP remaining: 47/60]
[Gun Pod 2 has been destroyed!]
[Gun Pod 1 HP remaining: 44/80]

Feebly, the gun battery's remaining weapons fire at your team, letting loose an unending hail of bullets. You contemptuously open Stormscraper, and the bullets bounce off it, as though it were made of iron and not cloth.

At the same time, the main flower opens up, and fires a precise, almost delicately small beam...which is scorchingly hot. You close Stormscraper while it is in flight, and put your hand out. It hurts...it hurts bad...but it goes no further, and dissipates harmlessly. Lluvia's hand becomes blackened, but she does not flinch, either. No one is giving up until this flower's wilted away.

We can't afford to waste more MC magic on the pod unless we are going to focus, which will need to be timed carefully if that mechanical whirring starts up again.

We need to get healed back up, because we won't survive another big blast, and can't win the fight before it happens again.

Perhaps this is the time to search for a combo between MC and Nina?

Any idea on how to kill the pod in the next turn? We can't afford to have a pod self destruct on us again.

We can do that focus combo I talked about next round.

I'm having some issues getting the spreadsheet open to look through attacks (my work computer doesn't like Google documents), so I'm open for ideas.

Pretty sure the mechanical thing was some kind of pod self destruct. So we need to make sure we fully kill the pod if we attack it again. If it gets low on health and lives we will probably be in big trouble.

And I've already given my plan for a safe(r) focus earlier in this battle.

I don't like the idea of searching of combos in a tough battle. If we don't find one we might screw our selves over, and we have no ideas on what might be a combo or how effective it will be if we do find one (the other combo we have is dependent on how low our health is). Plus I would rather save Nina's limited MP.

Will to Power pod 1
Soothing Rain
Attack Pod 1.

If we're going to search for combos (which I agree we should), it needs to be on a turn when Lluvia doesn't have to heal. Searching with only two attacks seems inefficient.

Well the big powerful attack didn't destroy the pod, so labeling it a self-destruct is just wrong. Anyway, after all that massive damage, the Assault Battleflower's MP went down. I think that it was obviously an attack from it, and it required a turn of forewarning to activate, and could be stopped with a context action, hence Kanz introducing context actions to us right there.

Other than that, I think we just need to keep healthy, which we can do with your focus plan, and whittle down. Though I have no problems waiting until we have all three ready to try weird combos. I just think it is likely that MC and Nina have something just between the two of them, might as well find it when we have the chance.

I'm okay with dowolf's actions.

Two more darts fly in response to the flower's attacks, silencing more plant machineguns. A simple furious glare from you is all it takes to make the remaining guns turn into sand. Lluvia disperses into rain again, further flooding the hallway. All that's left is the main gun now.

[MC HP remaining: 70/75]
[Lluvia HP remaining: 48/60]
[Nina HP restored to full!]

The flower is undaunted, and launches a brutal hail of gunfire. You try to stop it, and succeed for the most part, but several bullets graze your skin, and small holes appear across Lluvia's frame. Even with its backup guns slaughtered, the plant monster is not to be taken lightly. And worse, you hear a familiar, nightmarish whirring flaring up again...

I've got a bit of an odd thought. If I were to say perhaps, MC context further examine the whirring, and then Lluvia context based on MC's findings, would that, you know, work?

Also, I've saved the topic now. Shouldn't have any more need for it, so feel free to let it fade.
