Eh, the FFIX spoilers didn't really make me all that sad, because I was more invested in Zidane/Garnet than I was in Vivi, and he "comes back" anyways.
The whole Black Mage side story was really gutting though. Poor things. v_v
From: pjbasis | #155 I didn't notice IX having a particularly high encounter rate. I thought it balanced it out pretty well with how long the battles took. Same with VIII.
Wait what? battles in 9 took longer and there were more of them. On top of this leveling in 9 was slower.
Anyways, I'd have to rank it X>VII>IX i guess. I used to really like VI, but it's just a really good game now. I like tactics, but it's never been an amazing game for me either. I'm not found of the other games in the series, which includes 4, 5, 8, 12 etc.
X has a good cast of characters, opposed to say something like IX where I really only care about 2 of them. X also has blitzball, no friggen TetraMaster, Triple Triad, or Sphere break. Really, when did they decide using math was a good way to have fun in a game?
I love 7-10 + Tactics. Some of the most miraculous years of gaming. All great games. Ask me (excluding FF8) which one I like most and I'll give you a different answer each time. FF8 is my personal favorite, but I wasn't disappointed with any of those games. Even more remarkable that they were all made in a span of like 5 years.

Even more remarkable still is that Square managed to crank a couple of incredibly memorable game out that weren't even FFs during that span. Obviously I'm going to use every opportunity to reference Xenogears.
