I played VII for the first time a couple years ago, after long knowing about spoilers and after watching Advent Children, and yet I still loved the game. I played X a couple years before that, and enjoyed it, it's a good game. I like VII more.

I played about a quarter of IX and then got bored and haven't played since.

IX comes close, but no.

FFX is better than FFVII in its presentation but falls flat in gameplay and pacing, and lol not being able to explore **** until the very end of the game and even then you don't have a real world map...

What really holds IX back is its gameplay, honestly.

and I love FFIX but it's too slow, for the encounter rate it throws at you sometimes the battles shouldn't take that long to load and the characters should get to their turns faster especially when you have it on fast and it's slower than FFVII's standard speed...

And while I don't think ExDEATH is better than Sephiroth, they definitely compete for my favorite FF villain.

I like Kuja but the thong and general girlyness hold him back and Seymour was pathetic, really. He accomplished jack throughout the whole game as far as villain-ness goes.

I kind of wish IX had a better overall cast, but I still enjoy it enough for it to be a top 4 FF game. I kind of feel like Eiko, Amarant and Quina are entirely pointless.

Yes, yes it is. Sooner you realize it the faster you can get over it.

That said, I don't see how IX is more grindy than VII.

I would play tactics but I really don't like sRPGs for some reason.

FFIX's random battles take up much more of the game...there are some areas where you literally take 2 steps and are forced to battle, this completely breaks the flow of the game when you're trying to do something else

Well that's an issue with the random battles and granted a valid one. But when you say "grindy" I tend to think "augh, I need to get to Level 40 or there's literally no passing this boss." So considering Level 1 games of FFIX are all the rage, I was pretty confounded.

pretty much all the FF games can be beaten without intentional grinding AFAIK, when I say that I mean like, if I go into this area to do something or if this place has a good atmosphere, how much is random battling detracting from that? FFIX is the worst of the psx FF's by far in that regard, **** FFVIII was progressive enough to give you an encounter none ability and have the enemies scaled to your level so intentionally leveling was pointless to begin with. too bad FFVIII had so many other issues

I didn't notice IX having a particularly high encounter rate. I thought it balanced it out pretty well with how long the battles took. Same with VIII.

Top tier of Final Fantasy games for me is VI, VII, and Tactics.
