I'm going to Alaska for a week, and while I'll be doing stuff there, there is a lot of time I have nothing planned for, so I'd like to get some reading in. I haven't read a sci-fi book since I finished the Thrawn trilogy like six months ago.

Well, I've been reading Ender's Game. People say that's pretty good.

Ender's Game is great, as is the rest of the series. I highly recommend anything by Isaac Asimov (king of sci-fi, fo' real), especially the original Foundation trilogy and Nightfall.

Also if you like a sci fi background while most of the action is renaissance ship battles, read The Safehold series (starts with Off Armageddon Reef)
