Other then the fact that there are enough people who go "omfg, new madden" and buy it every year to warrant EA releasing it every year.
They could make up some of that anyway by inevitably charging some random amount for next-season roster updates that don't justify the time spent creating them at all.
I mean, I feel like sports games could actually be a lot better if the developers were allowed more time to focus on game mechanics and not have to rush out the newest edition with updated graphics and character models and all that "make it not look exactly the same" stuff. Then, they rush to implement a new feature and usually its something you barely notice. The only "added features" I've really noticed at all since the addition of the hit-stick in Madden are the truck-stick (which is the same idea as the hit-stick, just offensive), and the 'dog-pile' tackling. I suppose the "momentum" feature in 11 was noticeable, but it was mainly just more annoying than cool.
Basically, I'm just tired of "Hey, we only added 1 new feature, but did we mention there are over 5000 pixels on every character's nose? Oh, and the crowd is still almost completely lifeless but they cheer when the home team is winning."
Ehhh, there are actually a good number of awesome sports franchises that improve enough each year to warrant a purchase ike FIFA, MLB The Show, NBA 2K and NHL...now that I think about, most sports game are pretty damn good these days and the ones that aren't are taking a year or two off to improve like NBA Live/Elite and NHL 2K.

Can I just say that this topic is stupid? You're asking "why don't people who make annual sports games just reduce the amount of money their company makes for literally no reason at all except it makes some people they're never met feel good."
I thought NBA Elite/Live was planned to come out, but was cancelled because it was rushed and sucked. Although I'll admit that the NBA 2k series is pretty solid (2k10 aside) and I haven't really played a FIFA or NHL game in a while. Only baseball game I ever bought was MLB 2k9, which was a horribly choice as that was the one that was horribly glitchy.
Basically just annoyed that half the reason being pushed to by the newest game is the graphics every year. That and how NCAA Football is literally the previous year's version of Madden with less effort.
And that first part was meant to tell people that I already know the reason they do it is because they make a lot of money from people who must have the newest rosters/whatever. The point I was trying to make is that they could probably make a better game if they changed their policy. Actually, I remember there being rumors that when the lockout started Madden was debating taking a year off and coming back with a "more" improved game.
Oh, and didn't know biennial was the correct form until I looked that up and biannual gave me both 2x per year and 1x per 2 years. (For some reason this made me think of the flammable, inflammable thing)
