It still kinda perplexes me that people didn't understand the need for technical upgrades occasionally. It's not like the NES was the first console ever. We had already been through 2 generations of this!

the $200 SNES was the equivalent of the $399 Xbox 360. it was double the price of the NES. the 2600 never made the same public consciousness grab that the NES did, so for a lot of people having a 'super' NES didn't really sink in. it's similar to how people viewed the 3DS as another DS.

Wait, what? The 2600 shipped 40 million (compared to the 60 million of the NES, granted, but when we consider that Atari was never in Japan, these two systems are like...equally popular in the English-speaking world). The Atari 2600 was huge.

No, it's mostly just obvious that these newscasters don't really know videogames or take them seriously.

I'm not talking about sales, I'm talking about mindshare. the NES had so much more than the 2600 did. 2600 was always dwarfed by the arcade and sold well off of that boom. NES actually had its own games, had characters people easily recognized, had advertising way above and beyond the 2600, had their own tv shows, their own cereals, etc etc.

That F-Zero thing was great.

I remember reading Foxtrot comics that dealt with the same thing. Where Jason had to convince his mom to buy a Super Nintendo, and his mom thought that having to buy a brand new system was exploitative. It's funny that people thought like that back in those days. Or maybe we're the weird ones for having accepting it...

idk, sooner or later the technology wont be getting any better and it'll be silly to have to buy new systems. we're not at that point yet though.

People have been saying that for a long, long time now.

I dunno if we'll really get to the point where technology plateaus.
