Suicide Squad, written by Adam Glass with art by Marco Rudy and Federico Dallocchio

Description: Do not buy this book.

Suicide Squad was an early 90's series written by John Ostrander that followed a group of villains working for the US government, doing dangerous jobs that would deduct time from their prison sentences upon completion. It was a very strong title that contained a significant amount of character development and interaction and I highly recommend it. THIS Suicide Squad will contain a shifting cast, starting with Harley Quinn, King Shark, and Deadshot, and claims to be improving upon that formula. It's lying. Do not buy this book.

Creative Team: Alright listen up because this is important. Adam Glass has exactly 2 stories to his name today that he wrote solo, not counting some Deadpool work he had little input on. The first was an 8-page short in Untold Tales of Blackest Night, where Buddy Baker (Animal Man) gets possessed by a Black Lantern Ring (errr, emotional zombie ring), and then proceeds to attempt to rape Starfire. Yes. That happened. Oh it all turned out fine, White Lantern Corps blah blah blah. Not important. This was the worst tie-in story to Blackest Night, so bad that the story didn't even get credited. The second book he wrote was the Legion of Doom tie-in for Flashpoint. Prison escape, whatever, Heatwave squishes The Atom's head like a grape right after he CURBSTOMPS ANIMAL MAN.

You know, for kids!

Adam Glass has it in for poor Buddy Baker. This was the worst Flashpoint tie-in. But hey, you know, something violent like Suicide Squad could work with that, right? Wrong. Here's a quote:

"I remember reading the books with Bronze Tiger like playing cards or having coffee with Deadshot, and I said NO, these are hardened criminals. No one's gonna be sitting around having coffee. They go in, they get a bullet stuck in their leg, get pulled out of a hole and they're done."

These words don't mean a ton to someone not in the know, but what they translate to is "I'm going to take everything people loved about Suicide Squad and **** all over it".

Here's another:

"I grew up reading the SUICIDE SQUAD and have nothing but the utmost respect for all those who came before me. But I feel the world has changed and people want even their fantasy to have more reality to it. Look at James Bond’s Casino Royale. It was a new Bond for a new generation. Harder, smarter, less cheese. That’s what we’re doing with SUICIDE SQUAD."

Less cheese? Your three headlining characters are a wisecracking mercenary, an insane jester, and a giant talking shark. What the hell are you doing?

Marco Rudy is a a damn good artist and it is a shame, a SHAME that he's on this book.




Apparently he's not to fond of it either, because he'll be rotating with another artist, Federico Dallocchio. No preview pages yet for him, but here's some of his recent work.

Clay like people with flat colors, but there's far worse out there. Normally this would be an issue with the art changing back and forth, but not in this case, because you won't be reading this.

Ease of Entry: Whatever, sure. If someone for some reason read this it should not end up raising any questions other than "Why, God?"

Recommendation: What the **** do you think? This needs to be avoided at ALL COSTS. Every dollar spent on this is being thrown away. Interested in this book at all? Then DON'T BUY IT, so that maybe DC will give it a new writer. For now, this is tentatively being given the prediction of WORST BOOK OF THE DC RELAUNCH.

Looking through the list and Suicide Squad is honestly the only thing that looks like it's going to be downright terrible. Even O.M.A.C has Keith Giffen on it to tone down the DiDio bull****. Detective Comics is going to be boring as **** but it's not going to be OFFENSIVE.

Well Harley is supposed to be a fun-loving villain who doesn't really want to hurt anyone, but do to an unhealthy obsession with Joker isn't always mentally stable enough to hold herself back.

This is setting her up as a killer assassin or something.

I mean I like the LOOK a lot, but the way the character will probably end up is the problem I have.

Oh yeah, her personality change that's bound to come about this whole thing will probably suck balls, but the outfit is fine. It seems to suit her at least. I didn't know it meant she was going to become an assassin or whatever.

Honestly I really hope this whole Harley Quinn design is her just rolling with the whole government strike force thing and she doesn't plan on keeping it.

The rotating cast is the best news about this because it means this trio could all be spared from it soon enough.

I really, REALLY want to see that super detailed timeline DC is working on. The whole "five years" thing seems really sloppy with some characters, especially when you take stuff like One Year Later into account (although maybe it won't be canon anymore).


Also, reading Stormwatch v2 #10 right now and I get to the back where it talks about......WILDCATS vs. Aliens!

First thought: Why is there is a crossover between Stormwatch and the movie Aliens?

Second thought: .....Why is there a CANON crossover between Stormwatch and the movie Aliens?

Third thought: .......Why is there a CANON crossover etc. that is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THE STORMWATCH SERIES AS A WHOLE?

I think it's all just stupid, I find that more and more, the Guardians are showing signs of becoming villains. They're steps away from attempting to take over the universe rather than just guard it.

The cover to GLC #3 leads me to believe the Guardians took control of Ganthet at the end of Aftermath #2 somehow. If so, I could easily see that being the last straw.

That is seriously the only way I can see this going. So in the span of 70 or so issues, we'll have had the Sinestro Corps War, BN/BD, War of the Green Lanterns, and one more war, probably a revolt pitting all the GLs versus the guardians.

I really hoped Johns would finally get rid of them at the end of WotGL.

But instead he made them even worse, which I would only have barely believed was possible. Over the course of the run they've gone from well-meaning protectors yet COMPLETE dicks to "WOW, someone just ****ing kill these guys already"

Looks like Bedard is going to play some angle with them in New Guardians, though. STILL hoping that title turns out to be completely literal.

Yeah I was wondering what happened at the end of Aftermath 2, because they just approached Ganthet with malice on their faces. I thought for a second they were going to rape him. Wouldn't surprise me, the rate they're going.

I hope Sinestro destroys them and leaves Ganthet as the only one left, then the Guardians can be remade with people from other races and such, sort of like the Council from Mass Effect, only bigger.

Okay here's my Flash write-up. Tell me what you think and be honest, I can handle it.

The Flash, written by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato with art by Francis Manapul.

Description: Everyone knows who the Flash is, he's a guy that runs fast, great, but NO, he's not just a super hero that can run fast. He can run SO FAST, he practically breaks every law of physics, logic, and reason. Is he faster than Superman? F*** yes he is, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. "Superman beat the Flash in a race though," that was for charity, it has been confirmed that the Flash is much faster than Superman, deal with it.

Now what you may not know is just who is under this specific Scarlet Speedster's mask, because there is more than one Flash. The one starring in this book is Barry Allen, in a way the original Flash who died in the first Crisis and was reborn a few years ago. Most of us are more familiar with Wally West, but unfortunately he's M.I.A. as far as we know, so we have to deal with Barry instead. Don't let my bitter opinion get in the way though, Barry Allen is a great guy, a great character, and a great Flash, he set the groundwork for Wally to improve on as much as he did, and now Barry can do it all as well.

Regardless of who's under the mask, the Flash is a fantastic superhero and he definitely deserves your support.

The Creative Team: Oh man, this is interesting. Here we have two "writers" who are actually an artist and a colorist. Yeah, Francis Manapul is my favorite artist, he is utterly FANTASTIC. Especially on the Flash, just something about his drawing style translates so well to the amount of speed displayed on panel. There should be no doubt in this book's art. I can't say speculate on the writing, because Manapul is new to it. I assume he's got some good ideas, and he's collaborating with another "writer", so I have hope they'll be able to form a cohesive and enjoyable plot. We'll just have to see.

Seriously though, check out some of his artwork, it's godlike.

Brian Buccellato is a giant question mark, he's a colorist, and he's got very little history in comic books. I don't know how to pronounce his last name. Still, he was picked to co-write a big name superhero, so we can only hope they made a good choice. It's quite possible this will make him big and he'll go on to write on his own. Who knows.

This is one of the few books I'm really looking forward to, if nothing else but just for Manapul's artwork. I do have faith the writing will be good at least.

Ease of Entry: It's the Flash, you probably don't need to know much. Once again, Barry Allen was the Flash before Wally West. Barry "died", and then over two decades later it was revealed he was lost in the Speed Force (which is the mysterious reason for the incredible speed), and Barry Allen became a prominent character again, stealing the spotlight from Wally West. That's probably all you need to know in order to start reading from issue #1, but you could also read the more recent Flash series, which is only 12 issues in. That might help you get a little more prepared.

Recommendation: Get it! The Flash is an awesome superhero, one of the best. And as I've already made clear, Francis Manapul is the greatest artist ever, his art alone should sell this book.

And I really don't like Harley's redesign, either. I don't feel like the look really fits her and the whole assassin angle is just wrong for her. But I've never really cared for Harley all that much, so meh.

Aquaman, written by Geoff Johns with art by Ivan Reis

Description: Aquaman? Seriously? Aquaman? He’s completely useless! All he can do is swim around and talk to fish, right? That’s such a stupid power. Aquaman’s stupid and any book with him in it can only be equally stupid, right?

Wrong.

Let’s just skip the introduction and look at the preview, shall we?





You can see here that DC is serious about this. The King (of Atlantis) is back, and this time he’s not taking any crap from you smug landwellers. DC seriously plans on making Aquaman into a star again and erasing the joke that’s been ingrained into the public ever since Superfriends, although not without a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor to seal the deal. And to prove they’re not pulling any punches, they have an all-star creative team working on the book.

The Creative Team: Two words: Geoff. Johns. Love him or hate him, he is without a doubt DC’s most popular writer at this point. He is pretty much DC’s #1 creative force at the moment, and has been for quite some time now. His claim to fame is reinvigorating characters, most notably catapulting Green Lantern from “Oh yeah, that guy on the Justice League” straight to DC’s #2 comics series. And now, he aims to accomplish something similar with Aquaman. And boy, does Aquaman deserve (and need) that treatment.

One of the things Green Lantern showed Johns is really good at is world-building. In a span of five years, Johns (with help from the creative team on the Green Lantern Corps book), created an entire mythos for the Green Lanterns that culminated in two huge crossover events that placed the Lanterns at the very center of the DCU for two years. I would not be surprised in the slightest if five years from now, it is Aquaman who is at the center of the New DC Universe. That sounds like an absolutely preposterous thing to say, but if anyone could make it happen, it’s Geoff Johns. And so, world-building is probably going to be an important concept here. Who is Aquaman? Exactly what the hell does he DO spending all that time under the sea? The goal of the first story arc is to introduce a new set of enemies for Aquaman – eldritch abominations from The Trench, and we’ll probably see many new aspects of the sea in months to come.

As for the art, well, it’s done by a man named Ivan Reis. As you can see from the pictures, he’s a great artist with a very solid art style. What’s more, he’s worked extensively with Geoff Johns before on Green Lantern, Blackest Night, and Brightest Day. Just like Johns, he’s the big leagues, and the two have a lot of synergy and experience together.

Ease of Entry: I’d be lying if I said Arthur Curry aka Aquaman didn’t have ANY convolution in his backstory. He’s a comic book superhero, after all. But in all likelihood, the new series will be a great jumping on point, streamlining or skipping over bits of the history entirely. We’ll be seeing plenty of new faces as well as old, and like Johns did in Green Lantern, the returning elements will likely be made as accessible as possible for new readers.

Reccomendation: Get it! Johns is DC’s superstar writer, and this series could be the beginning of something really excellent. Plus….it’s Aquaman! This is his chance to truly shine, the most relevant he’ll be in DECADES. We could be in for a wild ride on this one, and it’ll be worth it just to see how it turns out.
