Nah. 9 parts, maybe. The first two issues were building off what was started in Rebirth and were the basis for a good comic. That Captain Boomerang issue (7?) was set-up for Brightest Day.

There's a crapload of Mark Waid, then ten issue break by Grant Morrison/Mark Millar in which Flash has to outrace Death AND Sonic the Hedgehog analogs, then more Mark Waid, then five years of Geoff Johns.

Hell, there's some Messner-Loeb before Mark Waid that is actually pretty popular. So basically, you get any Wally West flash book between that 10 year period, you're good.

Descrption: Batman as a character is one of the few title characters in the relaunch who does not need to be explained. The only question some of the more in-the-know interested parties should be asking is who's behind the mask. Dick Grayson's short but loved run as the Dark Knight has ended, and Bruce is once again the only man behind the cowl. But what everyone needs to be asking is, with 4 books staring Batman a month, 2-3 of which have him flying solo, why should I pick up this one? Simple.

The Creative Team: Scott Snyder is about as new as they come. It was only last year that he began writing his first series as a solo writer, playing second listing on a few Marvel books before that. This was, and still is American Vampire, an award-winning book that garnered no negative attention whatsoever, and is already seeing spinoff books from the same talent. It was critically acclaimed enough that DC decided to sign him on to DC proper book shortly after the start of American Vampire's run in Vertigo, another DC line. Near the tail end of last year, Scott Snyder started writing Detective comics, and continued on an 11 issue run that just ended a few weeks ago. It never outsold the Tony Daniel written and drawn Batman series, and compared to many runs on a Batman book was relatively short. Why all this backstory about a still freshly new writer?

Because Scott Snyder's 11-issue DTec run, known as "The Black Mirror", is already being heralded as one of, if not the best Batman story in history.

There is ZERO in question about the quality of this series. It's really doing it no justice saying "well duh, it's Batman, gotta read Batman". No, even if someone hated Batman, this would still be a must have book. If one book in the relaunch had to be considered "the one to buy if you only buy one", it would very likely be this.

After all of that, it's almost just dull to talk about Greg Capullo on art duties. And that's not to say anything negative about him, he's a talented artist, and sure to do a great job if the released covers are any indication. He just doesn't garner the fanfare of the writer, and honestly, doesn't seem like a perfect fit. The extremely well written detective story that is "The Black Mirror" does not seem like it would line up all to well with "the second most famous Spawn artist". But Capullo's art is very good and I'm sure it'll all work out in the end.

Ease of Entry: Batman is Batman. There's nobody who doesn't know the basics, and it's unlikely that this title is going to contain a significant enough presence of supporting bat-family to be an issue. The writer is still new and this is the first time Bruce has stared in a regular Batman title since his return. No worries.

Recommendation: Unskippable. Unlike many of the other titles that are going to be recommended, this one has no room for doubt. It will be great, hell, I doubt they could make it bad if they tried.

The Savage Hawkman, written by Tony Daniel with art by Philip Tan

Description: "Wow, where to begin with Hawkman...". That's pretty much the response you would have gotten from anyone inquiring about the character pre-relaunch. This guy was a MESS, with nearly dozens of origins and deaths and rebirths and contradictions. Around a decade ago the man was streamlined by DC fixer-upper Geoff Johns, but even that was more a matter of "just pretend what happened before didn't happen". Now he's going full reboot. New origin, and a history that's been nearly wiped clean. And if the new title is any indication, this Hawkman is going to be less archaeologist and explorer, more skull crushing. Wonderful.

The Creative Team: Tony mother ****ing Daniel. You've already read the Detective Comics writeup. The man can't write Batman to save his life. But that doesn't make this completely hopeless. This is the first title Daniel has written other than Batman, other than some editorially-mandated filler writer mess half a decade ago. Maybe he can surprise us. Probably not. Hawkman #1 is going to be a COMPLETELY new beginning, meaning it's on Daniel to build the basis for this hero. That includes supporting cast and new villains. Who's the last new character Daniel made? Catgirl.



Yes, that's real. That really happened. And she's as terrible as she looks. Thankfully she probably no longer exists. Maybe. Hopefully. So forgive the lack of faith here.

Philip Tan is the bright side here. The man is a fantastic artist, one of the best, and severely underutilized considering how long he's been working. I'd like to say look to his past work for example, but the page of Hawkman they've released honestly has very few similarities to what we've seen of him before. Thankfully, it's just as good, if not better.




Ease of Entry: 100%. Pretty much nothing regarding former Hawkman stories and origins is going to matter here, and that's a good thing. Is losing the radically conservative and politically short-tempered powerhouse of yore (who somehow still becomes enraged at the implication that he is a Republican) a shame? Sure, there's been good times. But it wasn't worth it. A new Hawkman book without this reboot would be nigh-IMPENETRABLE by the casual consumer.

Recommendation: Don't write it off. If this ends up being good, SOMEHOW, it could be very good. But it's not likely, and you can almost certainly go ahead and skip it for now. Good art can't save terrible writing. If you're really interested in the character, go ahead and throw down $45 on a preorder of the 688 page Hawkman Omnibus by aforementioned Geoff Johns. You'll almost assuredly be happier with that purchase than picking this up for $2 a month.

so I put it aside to give away cuz we throw away damaged issues

this kid comes up and it's his birthday and he has a gift card, I'm like "you want this spider-man?"

So you guys were busy while I was sleeping, but I read everything I missed, well skimmed at least. The only point I cared about was the Flash discussion, in which Wally West is indeed > Barry Allen, but Barry Allen has Manapul backing him up, so that in itself is worth reading, but the story isn't bad either, Johns is good.

There's been a bad habit at DC the last few years of giving you a **** colorist if you aren't a household name. Seems like they're doing a complete 180 on that practice.

I don't understand what you mean with this post. None of those scans you posted look bad. Those Captain Atom ones look really awesome actually, loving that artwork.

Yes.

But I'm really not a fan of that All-Stars work. I suppose those weren't the best examples, again with the issue of only the better stuff getting put on google, but I followed that book for 6 issues and the art was never great.

Tom Smith, he colored Wonder Woman for a while, and this image:



he says DC is very good to their loyal colorists, but the newer ones go to the crappy books nobody reads so they never really can work their way up easily cuz they have to land a "surprisingly good" book or something to get noticed

It's important to note that the unique look of those Captain Atompages is the result of Captain Atom being drawn while every other character and background is watercolored, which he plans to do for the whole book. Very interesting approach!

I personally really like the Harley costume but I completely understand why someone would be disgusted with it.
