I disagree

I was reading the book "A Talent for War" and halfway through I read the back cover. The spoiler on it drastically reduced my enjoyment of the rest of the book. I was pissed.

Spoilers, Leavitt suggests, "may allow readers to organize developments in the story, anticipate the implications of events, and resolve ambiguities that occur in the course of reading."

That's what makes the second viewing/reading enjoyable.

Yeah, that's my thought. The first time you go through you get the surprise. The second time you get to appreciate the craftsmanship of the story where you see all the indications.

You know thinking on it, a lot of people initially react negatively to big twists. They say "that's stupid" or "that came out of nowhere" when it really didn't come out of nowhere. Those people usually eventually come around on it (See: LOST season 3 finale).

I'm not one of those people and I enjoy twists, so I don't agree with the TC.

Bull***. That's not how stories work.

The point of foreshadowing is to be remembered after the payoff, so you think "Ah, so that's what was going on". Catching foreshadowing you missed on a second reading is satisfying too, but that doesn't make the initial moment of realisation irrelevant.

I've greatly enjoyed stories I've had spoiled, but every time that happens I still think "I wish I'd had the chance to be surprised by that".

In my experience, I have to say that finding out about the ending to a story before you get to it, definitely changes your overall experience of said story. It reduces the effect of any surprises, and any other effects the story was originally intended to have on you are dulled.

The Real Truth

I don't even need to read the article to realize they don't know what they're talking about. It does in fact ruin the story, because it alters the way you look at the movie. Any viewing or prior knowledge of the story that you're about to read/view will alter the way you perceive the piece of work.

For a great example of this, you really don't need to look any further than Shutter Island, with Leonardo Decaprio. It's the most revealing trailer of all time. I could predict what was going to happen. The Sixth sense? How would that have been if you knew what was going to happen prior to it happening? You instead start to focus on "how" and "when" did they give clues and foreshadowing as to what would actually happen, and you end up missing out on other aspects of the movie.

There's no point in studying the subject and to say otherwise is asinine.

Also to point out, they only compared 1) Short stories 2) Only stuff that you read 3) A particular type of spoiler dependent story 4) They only evaluated how much they preferred it moments after they finished reading it 5) They didn't compare it to rereading the same story after reading it the first time.

Not to say that it isn't possible that I can enjoy stories with the ending spoiled, but the study already has a bunch of holes in it. I'd need to see a replication and some way to control for the above factors before it approaches anywhere near what the realworld experience of spoilers are.
