Nintendo cares about you. That's also why they're removing backward compatibility for the GC (everything related to it) with the Wii. That's why the Wii-U controller is geared toward the hardcore gamer.

At least the Wii had backwards-compatibility for a full generation; the PS3 cut out PS2-BC year ago, solely because people weren't buying PS3-games for their PS3s.

I know we all love BC, but how long do you expect consoles to support their predecessors through hardware? They'll do something like put the GC-games online for sale...which sucks for those of us who bought it before, sure, but that sounds like a better price than having BC limit the potential of future technology. It's like being mad that your Blu-Ray Player won't play VHS-tapes -- isn't it enough that you can still play DVDs on them?

that's one theory, the other that has been prominent is that they want skyward sword to be the wii's swan song

either way, it's not worth waiting for them when you can just import it

I think a one generation backwards-compatibility is not unreasonable. Outside of an actual medium change (like VHS to DVD), I don't see why it would be unreasonable to think that I can play my PS2 games on a PS3 (which I can't, but I can play PS1, so what the ****). I mean, I've never not bought something because it lacked BC (my PS3, which to be fair I didn't buy but I also never complain about it), but thinking that an immediate successor could support the previous stuff doesn't seem crazy to me. When Blu-Ray+ comes out I can see phasing out DVD playback but keeping in Blu-Ray.

BC should be standard, there's no reason it shouldn't be doable when you can get a gaming PC that's superior to any console on the market and still play 10-15 year old games on it without issue as well, console makers just need to stop changing their architecture with every release for no real reason

BC WAS standard. For 5 years. Introducing a new -- cheaper -- model for those who haven't made the plunge yet and likely don't care about GCN support is a good business move, and doesn't really affect anyone who wants GCN support.

removing BC for the few stragglers isn't honestly a big deal. you can still go out and buy a BC Wii now if it's important to you and live in Europe or wherever they are releasing it.

Really, it's pretty unlikely that Xenoblade won't be released here. It's being hailed by many as a legitimate masterpiece, and it clearly has a lot of potential to sell well. I can't imagine NOA would be dumb enough to snub it... but if they do, they deserve to be a total laughingstock.
