I'm fairly certain that would hurt.

Well, uh... he's competing with swords and spears. Like, actual swords and spears. Auron uses swords that are as long as a teenager's body, and Tidus' swords are still huge. Admittedly, the others use staves, dolls, and... whatever Rikku uses, I don't remember.

Speaking strictly plot, I don't think the following characters have too much on Edward:

Relm
Cait Sith
Vaan
Penelo

Gameplay mechanics they all beat him cause LICENSE GRID and MATERIA and ESPERZ but yeah.

Keep in mind that Edward can play his harp so hard he can make elves from caves half the world away hear it, and he eventually becomes the general of the army of... whatever that town was called with all the leotard chicks in it. He's not totally worthless.

Edward's weak for awhile, but he gets absolutely ridiculous by postgame if you're playing the advance version (or anything other versions with the extra postgame content). Possibly the strongest character in the game.

In After Years, they kinda remark on how strong Edward became!

Granted, he was still so weak that two generic bandits could overpower him near the end and his only way to deal with it was jump into a river and try and get away.

Wakka makes some good maneuvers in Blitzball too. The dude's fit if nothing else, and he's got some sort of crazy aim with what's essentially a high velocity medicine ball sometimes covered in spikes. Granted, I mean he'd be stabbing the hell out of himself if he ever really did use one with spikes, but otherwise, he'd still be strong enough to knock a generic bandit out no problem, armed or not.

I'd say it's theoretically possible to assume that he's skilled enough to only catch it where the spikes aren't, or something. Like guys who juggle chainsaws.

I think it's safe to say Vincent at the end of his game is the strongest playable character in the series, unless we include Sephiroth. But that was because of some ancient god hanging out in his body at the time.

I'll interpret "regular play" to mean they stay more or less within their sphere grids (or just start poking out the end), they don't modify the sphere grid much, and they don't spend more than an hour or two on collecting/customizing weapons/items/Aeons.

In which case...what's the argument for Wakka, exactly? He has a good overdrive, and some decent status, but Yuna can summon and has Protect/Shell, Tidus has Hasteaga, Slowaga, Cheer, and Quick Hit, Rikku has Use (which potentially gives her even better versions of most of the above) and Trio of 9999.

I mean, I dunno--I feel like all you need to do is look at the solo, stay within sphere grid, no sphere grid modification challenges. Wakka's either third or fourth easiest on those (not sure if he's easier or harder than Tidus), despite being less of a support character than the other three.

Wakka becomes ridiculous in the main section of FFX once he gets his weapon with Evade & Counter on it because it becomes literally impossible for enemies who attack physically to damage him. And then he can just use his various Buster moves for the rest.
