Isn't it common knowledge that popular things are nearly always awful? After all, there's a reason they're popular... For one, anything that appeals to so many different people will obviously be extremely shallow and simple to accomodate so many different tastes. Secondly, the majority of people are stupid and conformist, and thus, popular things will have to cater to stupid conformist people, which automatically = bad.

It's the rule of the lowest common denominator.

Isn't it more likely that popular things simply reach across a wide variety of genres and subjects, which, because of people's narrow-minded view points, increases the chances that a single person won't like them, causing them to think a majority of popular things are awful, and only they can discern what is quality?

After all, I'm sure there are many popular things that you greatly enjoy. To you, those are just "exceptions", but to other people they're just as bad as the popular stuff you hate. Everything that is popular has its critics. From the perspective of a whole, those people are just the strange minority who don't like it.

While Takfloyd's post isn't entirely right (like the "the majority of people are stupid" portion - at the very least, I wouldn't say people's intelligence has anything to do with their taste in music), there's some truth to what he said. Simple music is more popular than complex music. This is why, for example, Ke$ha is far more popular than Tame Impala.

"People have different opinions" is the most overstated and trolltastic standard argument in discussions like this. It never fails to come up,and usually ruins the discussion.

Truth is, it's a bullcrap argument. There is such a thing as objective quality, especially when it comes to media, including music. Yes, people like different things. But that's because a lot of people like bad things. These are people who don't understand the topic in question.

People with no sense of musicality like bad music because they don't understand what makes music good. People who are afraid to be different or want to fit in with their friends like bad music to be accepted. People who think a band is just too cool on stage like bad music because... the band looks cool on stage. There's tons of reasons why people like bad music. Still doesn't make it a valid opinion to call it good.

It's the same with movies or anything else. As for the original topic, yes, girls are more likely to like bad things. That's because even moreso than men, women tend to want to fit in. You can always be sure that in any given circle of girls, everyone will like the same things. Then in another group of girls, they'll all like something else. I get the feeling that they often simply don't form thoughtful opinions about what they like and not. Not saying everyone is like this, of course, and it sure isn't exclusive to girls, but women are predisposed to this mentality, just like men are predisposed to love competition. Instincts and all that.

Then who is to judge what's good and what's bad? Usually it's simple. Those who have an innate understanding of and deep passion for the field in question. I've gone to animation and film school in addition to having played every game under the sun, so I can definitely say objectively whether a visual piece of fiction is good or bad. But there's no way I can say anything valid about sports for instance.

And now I've written too much so I'm going now.

you can't compare "twilight" to "star wars". twilight is girl porn, you have to compare it to something where the girls are overly sexualized and unrealistic that girls roll their eyes at but guys love. guys, for whatever reason, don't even seem to realize how most media treats women as sex objects but acts like it is the end of the world anytime they do something similar for women to enjoy. a better comparison to star wars would be something like harry potter, as they both appeal to both sexes but harry potter is more about relationships than fighting so more women like it.

You are completely wrong. Opinions are 100% subjective. Having an innate understanding of and deep passion for the field in question doesn't mean your opinions are "objectively right," it just means you understand and you're passionate about the field in question. Just because I didn't go to animation school doesn't mean I'm "objectively wrong" if I like some piece of animation you dislike.

No. No one can simply declare that a work in good or bad simply based on their own criticisms, as much as people want to think they can. There's always a large of number of different factors in play. Look at cultural biases. Different countries have different histories and tastes, which can vastly affect how the quality of a work is viewed by that country. You can't say that some music is objectively bad, because the appreciation of certain kinds of musical styles are steeped in the biases and influences of every person. Only if it completely fails to garner any kind of acclaim, usually because it fails to deliver anything close to what it was supposed to be, can it be considered bad.

In the end, it's entertainment. People wouldn't like it if it wasn't entertaining on some small level, which means it's doing its job, which means it's good. We all have our "guilty pleasures", things we enjoy even though we know it's shallow or unambitious, but where does that foolish mindset come from? Obviously, if we like the work in question, even "guiltily", then it's doing something worth admiring. It shows quality, even in an area we try not to give credit to. It's good, plain and simple. No matter what one critic may think about it, a good work will prove itself. A bad work will fail into obscurity, like it's supposed to.

1) Even music like that can't be called "objectively bad." This is because "what makes music good" and "what makes music bad" aren't objective entities that exist in the universe independently from human beings - like the sky - they're concepts invented by human beings. This is why calling a song "objectively good/bad" is a contradictio in terminis. You're applying an objective classification ("objectively") to something inherently subjective ("good/bad song").
2) I challenge anyone to find me a song that is not liked by a single person on the planet (I'm disregarding stuff like "a song I just composed that nobody has heard"). I've heard some pretty far-out stuff in music.
