Push/pull method? Like this?

By the way, I've been told that here in America (or at least in California) holding the wheel at 10 and 2 is now discouraged. The popular thing is 9 and 3, because of the way airbags pop out. That only began maybe 1-3 years ago.

I usually just do hand-over-hand when I'm using two hands.

I turn using one hand most of the time, my left usually. It involves using my palm of course, and it's not that difficult.

I'd say hand-over-hand is still easier though, and that's how I turn if I'm using both hands. Wtf UK.

Man, wth is that? I mean, I guess it works, but man is that weird...and counterintuitive. The only time I turn hand-over-hand rather than one-handed is when I need to turn HARD, often while I'm looking over my shoulder to, say, parallel park. Under the circumstances I would actually use hand-over-hand, I couldn't imagine doing this weird butterfly motion.

And quite honestly, how is it really that different from hand-over-hand functionally? Rotate wheel 60 degrees with one hand, then rotate it with the other hand, and then back to the first hand. The Brits just start the second hand in a weird place.

Apparently, you have less control hand-over-hand, and because your hands are reversed, it takes marginally longer to respond to things.

Are there any race car drivers that steer like this? If there really are legitimate benefits to steering this way, it would have been adopted in the racing world by now.

idk about you guys, but when I learned how to drive here in the U.S.A. like 4 years ago, they taught us to never use hand-over-hand steering, and it was definitely marked against you if you did it on the test.

When I learned eight years ago, they didn't care. I don't remember perfectly, but I'm pretty sure I did use hand-over-hand steering.

I use hand over hand, took a driving test recently, and passed. At least in California, using hand over hand is not an instant fail, and in fact, I got no comments about it. I could only see it being a problem if you're bad at using hand over hand and start to lose control or something.

It's just one of those things that you do in your test to make sure you don't fail and then as soon as you have passed you don't bother with it.

Afaik it is still far more difficult to pass a UK driving test than a USA driving test.

Got my license a little over two years ago, hand over hand was fine. The tester did not encourage or disencourage any particular method of steering. I myself switch between whichever style however I want - it actually doesn't matter and I don't know why people make a big deal out of it. As long as you never take both hands off the steering wheel, you're fine - there are like twenty more important things to worry about.

I don't see how you can properly hold onto the wheel though without hand over hand.

The angle gets a little uncomfortable.

also

why don't they just let the wheel turn itself back into place (both hands sliding but still actually on the wheel)

it's the best way to get back to going straight after a turn imo and the instructional video above showed him MANUALLY TURNING IT BACK

I always have at least one hand on the steering wheel. I almost always have two, even! (When I'm not using hand over hand or messing with the radio)

It made all the difference this one time when I ran into oil on the road.
