I need a TV for my new place, but I've never actually bought one before. I'm looking for something in the 32" range and could use some opinions:

Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG, or Other?
LCD or Plasma?
720p or 1080p?

Will be used pretty much only for gaming.

I've been told that certain brands are crappy, though maybe that's just things like Dynex that no one has ever heard of.

they don't plasmas below a certain size (42" I think). If you want to go bigger, and want to stay away from Plasma, then you have to dish out some bucks for a LED.

There are some other factors you might want to look into too. LCDs often suffer from angle problems (like what happens if you view your laptop screen at a weird angle) this has gotten less prevalent over time, but it's worth checking into. Plamsa's have also been traditionally better at handling blacks.

Plasmas will have less motion blur simply because the refresh rate is so high. However, if you have a 240LCD, or even a 120, it's not easy to notice.

Also, while getting like a 1080p 32" might be tempting, it's not really worth it. The screen is too small to really make a difference in 720 versus 1080. While there are factors like how far you are from the TV, and the brand, etc, often times you would have to guess in a blind test.

Uh no. Plasma are the best for gaming. Plasma > LCD > LED. LCD isn't bad a second choice, but if you game a lot, I'd stay away from LED's. It just looks bad imo. Plasmas have better blacks which is better for gaming imo. LED makes everything to bright and when you move causes blurring effects.

If you are going for Plasma, Panasonic is generally considered the best, Samsung and Sony being 2nd. LED's the best brand is Samsung or Sony, but they picture is considerably different and really depends on your taste(neither are bad).

I have a Dynex, XFD

It honestly looks really good. I've played blu rays and game in HD on it and it looks beautiful. Not as great as a more expensive brand, but oh well. For the price, i didn't care.

If you've got a lot of money to burn, yeah, get brand name plasma TV. LCD is generally cheaper though, and uses less power. They're also light as F***, which is really useful for when I LAN with people and we need an extra TV. I can carry it very easily by myself.

this flat out isnt true...at least these days, maybe ~5 years ago lol. LEDs can produce comparable if not flat out better dark levels to plasmas no contest in the modern day world. Not to mention reduced power consumption and thinner screens. LEDs are the best.

^Only if the LED has local dimming, which I'm not entirely sure are in every LED nowadays. LED's have advantages like you said, lower energy consumption($10 compared to $30-$40), vibrant colors, thinner screen if you care about that, but at the same time are still more expensive and no one is entirely sure on their lifespan yet. However that's only because Plasmas have been on the market longer.

Plasmas still look better in darker rooms, because of the nature of how they are built, but have a bad glares during the day. So, like I said, if you are a movie buff, or a big gaming person, I think Plasma is still the way to go. That's just my opinion.

LED's give me massive headaches when I play games on them, but are perfect for television.

If you're only going to be gaming, might be good (and cheap) to find a used CRT. Almost any HDTV is going to incur anywhere between 2-5 frames of visual lag. Which is bad news!

CRTs are terrible for current gen gaming.

depending on the size of the tv, you might not need 1080p. If the tv is under 32 inches or so, 720p is perfectly fine, and probably a good bit cheaper

The 2-5 frames of lag you're claiming are nowhere near as bad as all the resolution you're losing by playing on a CRT. I'm really curious to know what games you're playing if you believe it's a fair trade. The only game I'll even play on a CRT is SSF4, and even that is worse because it feels like you have less of the screen to work with.

I have an LG, 47" LED, and I freaking love it. Both movies and games look fantastic. LCD is pretty great too. I've always said that Plasma sucks and I will continue to say it, I don't like Plasma TVs, I don't think they're worth it at all when LCD and LED are so much better.

If you're set on a 32", then as others have said, 1080p won't really be worth it, but if you're up to it, I would suggest getting a bigger TV. At least 40", if you can afford it. Then make sure it's 1080p and not 1080i, because actually I think 720p is better than 1080i (so if you do get a 32" still, make sure it's 720p). And also make sure you get 120Hz and not 60Hz.

Oh and if you see anything above 120Hz, don't bother with it, as I'm pretty sure it's just a way to jack up the price of the TV, because you wouldn't really be able to see much of a difference from 120Hz and up.

CRTs are good for fighting games, because of the lag on HDs. I have like 3 for smash =]

Is getting 120Hz really important? I've looked at quite a few TVs now and I haven't seen a single one with more than 60.
