I hope you got it for cheap cause it seems rather short-sighted to buy a game without knowing what makes it "good."

EDIT: Also I don't have a PS3 or PSP

Suikoden 1 (and 3) is good but don't expect it to be great.

That's what you expect 2 and 5 to be.

If you ever play 4 expect it to be absolute s*** though.

IMO though, the absolute best reason to play Suikoden is to enhance Suikoden II.

II is excellent as a standalone, but knowing the returning characters beforehand really makes the game even better.

Honestly if I needed a quick $50 right now I'd buy it. I have a copy with a fine case and manual. I'd just put the $85 one in that case and keep the damaged manual (not like I need it), and re-sell it as "good"

but what is it that makes it so good?

Its fast paced battle system, you get to use 6 characters in battle, you get your own mountain castle, there are a total of 108 characters in the game that you can recruit, each one needs a different methods of recruiting. The runes, wars, and duels make the game unique The storyline is interesting without being too complex, the setting is perfect, the music is fittingly awesome and the art style is great.

You have made the right decision buying this game. Make sure you pick up Suikoden II after beating this one.

Now that I think about it, I do have somewhat of a conundrum.

If they ever do release it on PSN, the value will drop. It won't plummet completely (Suikoden 1 is still worth $30 in good condition), but it'll definitely decrease the price of a used copy.

I am not someone that cares about owning physical copies of games (although I do care about owning legal copies, downloaded or physical). If I can turn a profit by selling my physical copy and replacing it with a downloaded copy someday when I'm in need of cash, I would totally do it.

So my issue is this: should I just go ahead and sell my copy sometime soon under the assumption that it'll eventually be a $5-$10 download, or do I hold onto it just in case it never is?

Suikoden II is my favorite game, but after playing both Suikoden III and Suikoden V, I was second-guessing my rankings. Still, I can't help but put Suikoden II at the top. Both 3 and 5 are much longer games than 2 so it's harder for me to find the time to replay them, but I did find that upon replaying 5, it wasn't quite as good as I remembered it, while every replay of Suikoden II for me is just as enjoyable as I hope. I think I've only played through Suikoden III once (I feel so wrong saying that...), but I've read the manga several times.

I definitely agree about the main characters in 3 having a lot of personality, but I wouldn't suggest that they didn't have much in 2 (not sure if you were, though). Jowy is my favorite character in the entire series and I think he, Nanami (especially), and even Riou have definable personalities and a healthy amount of it, too (though clearly in Riou's case, less of it than in the others).

Yeah, those supporting characters were great, especially Jowy. But I mean how the main character doesn't really have a personality outside of you just saying stuff for him, while the 3 main characters in S3 were a lot more defined. It always kinds of hurts my enjoyment of an RPG when the main character doesn't have a personality, and is just kinda along for the ride

I, II and III are fairly connected, in the sense that there are quite a few recurring characters and their actions are motivated by what's happened in the previous games.

IV is a distant prequel (as in a few hundred years before I), but still sets up a few elements. V is another prequel, but much closer, being only a few years before I. Again, it sets up a few things, and gives a handful of characters a bit more backstory, but its own plot is pretty much self contained.

IV -- V -- I -- II -- III
is the chronological order of the games, but play them in release order.

IV takes place 140 years before V, then it's 10 years until the original, then 2 years until II, and then 15 years later part III happens, and it's the last in the series chronologically.

Also I haven't played Tactics, but my understanding is that the game opens prior to Suikoden IV but ends after the conclusion of IV.

If you're including it, you should play IV first, because you can carry over saved data.

That's another thing cool about the series is that your saved data from one game often can carry over to the next, to enhance recurring characters' stats, and for bonus items.
