Poor Dragon Quest. 8 was such a great game. 9 was at least okay. They should have taken a piece from Pokemon's book and just went with what has worked for ages.

I've never thought of DQ's battle system as being "archaic." It works just as well today as it did 20 years ago, probably even better thanks to the streamlining over the years. To me, there's no real advantage gained by putting a layer of "fake" action on top of the battle system the way most RPGs do these days. In a way, it just adds extra fluff that gets in the way and makes it worse. There are fewer games like DQ every year, which in a weird way makes it unique and standout from every other "JRPG with an action-oriented battle system."

I'm not surprised by the confirmation that you'll need to be online in order to play the game, though. That was the tone they had during the conference. They never actually mentioned an "offline" mode, just that you could get by using generic AI characters for your party. There are way too many things that require you to be online to use effectively. That does kinda suck that it's look like Japan will have to pay a subscription fee regardless of how they play it.

This is pretty much what I wanted from DQIX to be honest. As a Westerner, its difficult to find friends to party with. Now that it is online its just not a big deal anymore. And again, it isn't like you NEED to play with people. You can still party with NPCs. Not a big deal.

ZFS is pretty much spot on with how I feel for the most part.

And While DQIX was okay, I definitely wasn't thinking "if only I could get more out of the Multiplayer aspect" ill tell you that much.

The whole design of the game changes when you build it around playing with multiple people. Can you play with generic NPCs? Sure. Does that mean it's now a single-player experience similar to other Dragon Quest games? Not at all. It's just a fundamentally different experience regardless. That doesn't mean it can't be fun, but it's now something totally different.

I'm all for an online version of DQIX's gameplay, the problem is this looks like an awful version of that.

That Golem fight they showed off was terrible. I loved how battles in recent DQ games were so lively. Monsters jumped around, and had great animation, and the battles in the 3D games always looked exciting. The battles in this looked like a soulless, clippy clusterf***. It was embarrassingly pathetic.

Nikkei coined the latest "Shock" in a story on Sony's falling stock prices today. Sony's stock has been continuing to fall for the past three days, and today it reached its lowest level of the year. Nikkei's headline for this story read "Dragon Quest Shock Causes Decline."

The head of Rakuten Investment Management told the paper that investors may be concerned that the appearance of DQX on Wii and Wii U could lead to Sony's games business losing customers.
