Anyway, Seitokai no Ichizon... on second that, leave that until you've watched others. Chockful of references.

I feel that anime just refers to a style animation and not a genre or medium.

I've watched lots of anime but don't consider it a hobby specific to itself that's separate from tv shows and cartoons.

How is it something you can't "get into", which just means that you started seeking it out, even if it's just a style.

In America, it definitely qualifies as a separate umbrella-genre, the same way foreign films are called, well, foreign films.

Fine I'll concede on the basis that you can get into "japanese animated tv shows."

But it seems awfully broad and not what the expression is typically made for, and I doubt what he was using it for either.

You're intentionally blinding yourself. Films tend to have styles unique to their countries of origin, as do any other kind of entertainment.

There's a reason when you flip over to the Spanish channel, it looks like another frickin' dimension..

Everyone knows there are 2 uses of anime.

In the West, we use it to mean "cartoons made in Japan"
In Japan, they use it to mean "cartoons" regardless of where they're made.

Complaining about someone in the West not using the Japanese meaning is stupid.

Okay, yeah Foreign films don't have a lot of differences from American films now. But back when genres were still being introduced into the mix they were noticeably different.

Also, something like a Disney movie and a Miyazaki movie have completely different feels to them.

Nothing inherently different though. Yeah there are bound to be similarities between American films against Italian films and whatnot, but the same can be said about films between different directors.

Classifying them as American vs. foreign just seems arbitrary. Lots of foreign films are made that are hardly any different from ones here. And the Spanish channel is a pretty bad example. Soap operas evolved into something way more mainstream than they did here.

Look I'm not picking at some wording about "anime" and what it means. I just feel that people grouping it all together are either elevating it or discriminating against it just because of it's country of origin. Liking one anime does not mean you're going to like any other.

The example of "I just got into jrpgs" is more valid because jrpgs all have similarities that the term anime does not.

He didn't say "I liked an anime, recommend me any other anime ever because all anime are similar."

He identified 2 anime in the same genre, so that's obviously the genre he's referring to as wanting a recommendation for.

You're giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm making an assumption too, but he clearly just said anime. I've seen people before who were biased against anime suddenly feel that they could like the whole thing just because they saw one and liked it.

I have no idea if this is the kind of comedy you had in mind, but

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo has almost literally a joke a second, and action that revolves around the humor. Speaking just on the dub, it loves puns and wordplay, and just generally being ridiculous. You really have to watch an episode or two to know if it's for you.
