So I received my very first official job offer yesterday – it’s a terrific offer and I’m definitely going to accept it at some point – but everyone I’ve spoken with has told me that I should ask for more and I’m not really sure how to approach this when I call HR later today.

Without going into too much detail, I currently work in academic research. This job was originally posted as a temporary position in industry (basically 3 years with the possibility of being promoted to a permanent position based on performance) with a relatively modest salary for the industry. But I have pretty decent experience in the field and I know I gave a knockout interview, so I was prepared to counter whatever they offered me by asking for both a guarantee I’d be promoted within two years and for a higher base salary.

But they preempted me in both. Not only did they offer me the higher, permanent position off the bat, I’m starting close to the top of the pay scale for that position as well. So there’s really not much I can ask for in terms of salary or title and, quite honestly, I’m pretty thrilled with the offer in general.

But all the friends and family I spoke to last night say I should still ask for more – signing bonus, more stock options, etc. – and while I suppose it doesn’t hurt to ask, I’m doubtful they’ll give me anything else given what they’ve already offered. So how should I approach this on the phone? I’m planning on calling HR later today in mid-afternoon. And keep in mind that even though I have decent experience in the field, I've never worked in industry before.

I’m kind of looking for anecdotes as to how other people negotiated, successfully or not. Did you call, e-mail, and how long did it take? <.<

Not my first job, just my first job offer that I have to negotiate. Academia tends to have very set salary and pretty much no benefits, so there's really nothing to negotiate there. :P

If you are getting more than you expected, it's not worth asking for more.

In today's economy, companies are in the position where they have dozens of qualified applicants who will work for little pay. They might hire someone else if you give them ****.

This is generally my thought as well, but most of my family and friends tell me this is the only time I have any leverage and that asking for more is expected and demonstrates you're not afraid to ask for what you want. <.<

Hmm, a good way of getting leverage is if you have another job offer (or say you do). If you haven't mentioned that you were going for other jobs then I don't think you can use that now, to be honest if the offer is better than you were expecting and they've gone out on a limb to make it better than advertised, I think that asking for more would come across a bit greedy.

Accept it, work hard, and ask for a raise once you have some tangible proof that you deserve it.

I mean in reality there's probably a 90% chance that they will just say no, and a 10% chance they will be pissed enough to hire someone else.

It all depends on how badly you need the job.

Based on the fact that they already gave you more than the initial job posting I doubt they expect it. In fact the various HR people I have talked to seldom expect or want a negotiation. They give you the offer, you accept it or they go to the next person in what is probably a pretty long list.

You can try and negotiate, but if they turn down your attempt stop immediately. Negotiating against an already great offer could just make you look greedy and could cost you the job. Doesn't seem worth it to me, not when they already gave you more than you expected.

This is my philosophy as well. But everyone I've spoken to who have gone through this process before tell me it's the wrong way to approach it and that companies expect you to negotiate. That's kind of why I was looking for anecdotes. <.<

I dunno, I may just call and accept the offer - I'm thrilled with the position anyway - I'm just kind of taken aback by the number of people who have to told me that's exactly the wrong thing to do. o_O

I don't have an anecdote for you. I just wanted to say that it sounds like you're happy with the offer, and you shouldn't let your friends and family pressure you into trying to ask for more if you think this is enough.

Here's an anecdote: You don't negotiate with entry level jobs.

Save the negotiations for when you are currently employed and are looking at other companies

I think it's very easy for people to egg you on when it's not their job to lose, at then end of the day you're only going to get better terms if you play hardball, if you just phone up and say can I have more money they're not just going to give it to you without a fight. It's going to be a negotiation like you said, and if you pull out too early you might look a bit silly for asking in the first place, if you hold on too long you might lose the job.

I think you stand to lose far more than you stand to gain, especially in the current climate where employers are keeping an eye on the wage bill.

Fair enough. I am currently employed though and I could have easily stayed in academia if this didn't work out. In fact, it's going to be a little sad to leave my current place of work as I like my coworkers, the atmosphere and the work that I do. But this new job is still in my field, has a much higher salary, a lot more perks and greatly reduces my commute.

But yeah, I'll probably just accept it when I call. To me, that does feel like the right thing to do anyway. =)

Be straight with them:
They could either hire you with some extra bonuses and such.
or they could get the next guy... you know, the guy that you can't help but think has several severe mental problems... maybe he's a pedophile, or he is bipolar, who knows. He's less qualified than you at the lest. I mean, they could always just take the risk and hire him, but what cost is it to just give you some bonuses and have the security of hiring a sane and skilled guy such as yourself.

Weren't you thinking about heading back to school or something? Also, were you the one I was talking with who was doing EMT work? <.<

I will miss Yale. Won't miss the commute, but I will miss the atmosphere and my colleagues. And the occasional Chinese dish from the hospital carts. =)

Yeah I actually did get into a program to try to get me into med school, but thanks to applying late in rolling admissions they contacted me and were like "Hey, congrats, you got in! Now be here moved in and ready to start and pay us a year's tuition, all in the next 10 days". Luckily, got the admission deferred a year so I'll spend another year finding the money to pay for it and getting more publications.

And yes I was the one doing the EMT work and teaching MCAT as well.

And ahhhh the carts. I prefer the "Good healthy not oily" cart that's right near the walk to the cafateria, but my friend swears by "healthy way".
