Aside from Hawaii, my guess for next biggest island would be New York's Long Island. At least in terms of the 50 states.

Kodiak Island in Alaska is 2nd. Puerto Rico is 3rd.

37 of the 50 biggest American islands belong to Alaska.

The correct answer was the big island

but that wasn't the point, nor was it that ONE "smart" person made an ignorant comment (although that was true about the girl who said Costa Rica). The team of US citizens, all of whom were from the East Coast discussed the answers. And came up with Rhode Island.
