I want a dog I can have in a small to medium house comfortably that's both intelligent and very friendly.

First is probably going to be a Corgi or Standard Poodle, and if not I'd adopt a Greyhound :3

I love Standard Poodles!

No "poofy" cut of course, just their natural air growth.

From your specifications, Greyhound is definitely out. Greyhounds can't live comfortably in a completely indoor setting. They need lots of space to run around and expend their excess energy and will become frustrated if they don't get it. Also, Greyhounds that are kept almost exclusively indoors are very likely to become obese.

I'd go with the poodle. They're extremely intelligent and don't seem to mind lots of time indoors (though you still need to walk them regularly). However they require lots of upkeep. Keep that in mind.

It wouldn't be exclusively indoors; I'd take them to dog parks as needed. They can live comfortably in a small area though, as they're more couch potatoes than anything. But I'll do more research before I make any choice.

And yeah, I'd walk any dog regularly, regardless. And most would require upkeep of some form :3

Adopted Greyhounds can have all sorts of issues. My grandma has always had an adopted Greyhound (when one dies, get another) and they've all been pretty weird dogs. >_>

I want a Newfoundland. Because I want to have a pool and a kid, but I don't want to have responsibilities regarding the combination of the two.

Greyhounds becoming couch potatoes = not good...

Glad to hear the rest though. Any reason you'd pick a standard poodle over a miniature?

Definitely don't get a toy, as some toy dogs aren't friendly, but miniature is my personal favorite variety of poodle.

@Jeff Zero, are you implying that you're allergic to man's best friend, because that makes me sad...

As in not overly energetic, not as in they never go and play or anything. I'd keep my dog active and healthy :3

I generally don't like smaller dogs too much; Corgi is about the smallest I'd go. Plus I've had experience with both, and I like the general personalities of Standards a lot more.
