The series is called a Song of Ice and Fire, and the first book is called A Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones is small-time stuff.

Clash of Kings/Storm of Swords is when **** really hits the fan.

a song of ice and fire is a pretty good series of books

not the best fantasy i've read, but definitely not the worst.

i've yet to watch the show though...but everything i have heard has been that it is good television.

I was hoping we'd spin this entire topic into it not being a book after Menji's first post. Alas.

Huge WoT fan myself. Not sure it's my favourite but it's not far from it.

A Song and Ice and Fire is... pretty good. I have some problems with it but overall I'd say if you liked the TV show (which I haven't seen but it sounds good; the books feel like they'd transfer to TV well) and you enjoyed wheel of time that it's worth checking out.

WoT holds a special place in my heart because it's one of the first fantasy series I got into. ASoIaF is pretty much objectively better though. The characterization especially is great.

I haven't yet read WoT, though I've read the Sword of Truth series, which I've heard rips off WoT like crazy. I liked SoT, but it's a little too something (maybe a lot too, at times) and I completely understand how people wouldn't like it. Anyway, if SoT and WoT share as many similarities as I've heard, it doesn't sound like comparing WoT and ASoIaF in terms of the fantasy genre is really appropriate. Don't take my word for it, though, since I don't even really know what WoT is about.

I think ASoIaF is excellent. It's not your standard fantasy setting and I think that helps me, at least, to be able to take it more seriously. The fantasy aspect is more of a backdrop rather than an integral part of the world as it is in so many books in the genre.

Basically, if you like the show and you like to read, you should definitely give the series a shot. Keep in mind, if you do, the series slows down at the 4th and 5th books, but after reading the magnificence of the 3rd book, you can't help (or shouldn't be able to help, at least) but realize how absurdly awesome the series will be concluded. Let's just hope George R. R. Martin doesn't do what he's afraid of by "pulling a Lost" as he put it.

aSoIaF >>>>> WoT

And I loved WoT.

It really is a different type of fantasy almost, though. WoT is a very stalwart example of what Fantasy should be: a lot of magic and villains mixed with a healthy amount of politics. aSoIaF throws away a lot of the more fantastical ideas to focus a lot more on character development and an engrossing political plot with tons of subplot everywhere. Because of this focus, it actually throws away quite a bit of the natural inconsistencies that comes with every system of anything to do with supernatural stuff.

Whatever, I'm not the most coherent at the moment, but you should definitely read. Yay!

I like Wheel of Time a LOT more than aSoIaF (though I still like it).

But they're really two different subgenres and hard to compare.
