Most games available on it are also on the PS3 and both the PS3 and the Wii have better exclusives than the 360. Neither the PS3 or the Wii have well known hardware problems either.

Congratulations to BlAcK TuRtLe, the Guru champion for the 2010 GotD.
wii having hardware unreliability too aside, the 360's best games are almost all available...and better, on the PC. no console should really be popular at this point with how much better the PC is though
the PS2 is also noteworthy in that sony had to be forced into fixing its manufacturing defects by a lawsuit(so unlike them), nintendo and microsoft have fixed their defective systems free of charge.

No, it is like them. My PS1 was within warranty, and the CD-ROM drive was dead on arrival. I sent it to Sony a few times, and they refused to fix it. They then asked for a fee, my mom paid it (this was 1997, so I was 7 or 8 at the time), and they still did nothing but return half the fee and ship it back. This sounds a lot like the PS2 situation (refusal to fix disc reading problems), although it doesn't seem like a common problem with PS1s.

I've known more people with the PS3 YLOD than 360 RROD.

the wii has a pretty well known disc reader issue amongst the 10% of wii owners that actually played the console for more than a month before packing it into the attic.

Most games available on the PS3 are also on the 360 and the 360 has better exclusives than the PS3 and the Wii. Opinions, dude.
As to why the 360 is popular, many people agree with the statement I just made. Hell, even many people who prefer Wii and PS3 still got a 360 to use as a Halo machine. Also, it has the highest quality online service (yes, you pay for it, but there's no denying its the best). Some XBLA exclusives are absolutely outstanding as well. Finally, some people prefer the controller to the other two systems.
There's a million reasons why the 360 is popular. I've only had 1 RRoD and the system was over 5 years old when it occurred. Can't complain about that.

To answer your question, for me it's a matter of timing.
360 came out, what, six months, if not a year, before Wii or PS3. I bought it then and started building a library of 360 games. Then the Wii/PS3 came out. The Wii was cheap and offered something new that wasn't available for 360. The PS3, however, didn't have games that appealed to me and was 600 dollars. This stayed true for quite some time as the Wii became even less appealing to me (I don't enjoy most of their first party games) and the PS3 took far too long to lower the price.
Now we've reached a point where the PS3 has a decent library, but any multi-platform games, I'm gonna buy them for the 360, because it's so late in the consoles' lifetime to want to pick up a new PS3.
Plus, my 360 never red-ringed on me, so yeah, there's that too.
360's got the better exclusives between it and the PS3 far as i'm concerned. nobody puts Wii in the same sentence as either since the Wii's exclusives really are simply exclusives and there's a good amount of 'em. there's a reason Wii60 and PSWii are words that exist. helps that for a good portion, the 360 was the cheaper console. still is if go the arcade route and don't mind minor tinkering/using usbs.
and outside of board 8, maybe know 1 person who's had the problem.

I have never had a single problem with any of my consoles (or handhelds) and I have generally bought every major console release since the SNES was released (think I've only given original XBOX and the Wii a miss).
Granted there's probably a bit of luck in there but what on earth do people do to their consoles to make them fail so often.

Crucifying my Oracle average one match at a time
360 generally has the best version of most multiplatform games (compared to the PS3). 360 has the best online (compared to PS3 and Wii).
Those are the selling points to me. (I did end up buying a PS3, though).
