Personally I couldn't even bring myself to play more than a little bit of 12, despite liking what I saw of the plot. Just... characters are a bunch of clones (gameplaywise). And battles... felt like FF13's but without paradigm shifting (which is so core to what makes 13 fun), at a slower pace, and without the excellent challenge balance. Maybe I'd have liked 12 more if I'd gave it a chance, since I did like 13 much more than I expected.

lol at FF13 flopping but that's already been covered. Game also seems better-received than FF9 in places that aren't board 8, which is to say people actually care about it. (I can't count how many times I've seen people talking about FF7 vs. FF8 vs. FFX...) Honestly I'd have pegged it as the third most liked 3D FF after 7 and 10, it just has more detractors too! (many more) Hard to say though. I might just be seeing what I'd hope to see as a fan of the game, but this was kinda my impression even before playing it and I wasn't really expecting to like it nearly as much as I did. Polarising game is polarising.

Honestly, I'm damn surprised how much this topic exploded.

Personally, XIII was a heavily-flawed but otherwise enjoyable game. Having hands on experience with FFXIII-2, I can safely say that most of the flaws were left... well, flawed. I'll probably still like it, but I can't help but think the game has potential to be more.

It's quite a joke to say it flopped critically when there has not been a single JRPG on current gen consoles to average over 90% in reviews. And unless you count Valkyria Chronicles, it literally is the best reviewed JRPG in this generation.

Anyways, I effin loved 13, but that trailer doesn't excite me in the least. It'll still be a day 1 purchase for me, but I can't say that it looks better than 13.

It still did way worse with reviews than any other mainline FF game. And Persona 4 kills it in ratings if you count it, since it released in the same time frame of this generation.

And thats just professional reviewers, anyway. They typically don't like JRPGs so their scores won't reflect how real jrpg fans think. Like I doubt there are many true JRPG fans who played both Tales of Vesperia and Final Fantasy XIII that prefer XIII.
