I think it was in the original Disgaea too...or Disgaea 2?
Anyway, the lower the rarity is, usually the better an item is...IIRC. You shouldn't worry too much about it yet, unless you want to grind and go to the Item World ASAP.
what exactly does rarity do? should i be worried about this too much?
no worries til endgame.
Though legendary/rare items do have slightly better stats than their common counterpart, the actual # doesnt mean a whole lot(theirs item world impacts beyond this, but endgame, again).
Although if you have items equipped on a character with the same rarity # you'll get bonus stats, this isnt something you really care about early on as you will be replacing items at a pretty frantic pace.

Only worry about rarities once you're trying to get your perfect equipments. Which is a LONG time from now.
IIRC, 0-7 are Legendary, 8-31 is Rare, 32-255 Normal. Rare items are stronger than Normals, and Legendaries are stronger than Rare. The best equipments are Legendary only, if it's the same as in D1 & D2.
Rarity matching (as in, the same number) gives even more boosts when equipped together.
For starters though, I'd just steal any item that says new if you're a perfectionist.

I'm trying not to OCD on this. All the rare and legendary equipment says new...even the crappy ones that you havent had a use for since the beginning of the game.

FYI The Legendary, Rare, and normal versions of the same item count as different items in a completion%. Not that you'd care. Hell, I'm not even sure if D4 keeps track of your item completion rate.

I'll be honest, I don't really know what I'm doing with my characters. I made a new Theif, female Fighter, and female Mage. I guess I'll just level them up?
And the Cam-pain HQ is basically my character slots, right? Does it matter who creates a new character, aside from how much Mana I'll have to boost that character's stats?
azuarc posted... I love the original Ogre Battle, but it's very possible to lose in the tutorial stage during the fight with Warren. And you do indeed Game Over.

and while i'm at it, any other tips i should know as i start? missable items or anything?
I spent so much time leveling items and stuff and then I got to the post game just a couple hours ago. I can get any monster to level 200 in like, 10 minutes.
