Basically they're saying that everyone's frothing at the mouth to play the game, so they're going to let us.
Beta's going to open up much more rapidly than planned, and I'm hearing that the NDA's already been lifted so streams should be going up really soon.

I think I'd actually have to take the bus to get there. Apparently Valve was founded here, but they moved a city over. I'm guessing they're down in the area near Microsoft/Nintendo, which is in Redmond, but on the border of Bellevue. A bunch of businesses are over there.

Lucky. The only gaming company I live near is Blizzard. That used to be pretty awesome, but it's gotten less so over the years. >_>
I guess Obsidian's not that far, that's kinda cool.

They actually ordered them pizza and soda, then invited them in to play DotA 2 and get a tour. Then they hung out for a few days. Gabe's got a heart of gold.~

Any word on whether it's F2P or not?

I'm not even sure if it'll run on this computer and I'd hate to spend money on something I'm unable to play.

Still, it's looking pretty good, should complement LoL nicely.

No word yet. The last thing we heard from Gabe is that he wants to focus on making the game perfect before he figures out how to make money off of it, though he said F2P is definitely an option.
The way things are looking now though, open beta will probably be going on for a really long time before release, as they slowly add heroes and polish towards the final "release". So if nothing else it'll be "free" for you to test on your computer for quite some time.

That's true. If I'm ever given access to the beta, that would be a good indicator.

Regardless, I'm excited. LoL has been serving me well and I'm not going to abandon it for DotA, but I definitely want to try something new.

I'm pretty excited.

And I'll be surprised if they didn't go F2P at this point. They seem to have plenty of cosmetic changes in mind, and given how successful TF2 and LoL have been off of a microtransactions model I can definitely see DotA 2 following suit.

I really hope Dota 2 at least has an initial fee. I really don't want to be stuck in games with people that have never played and just end up leaving after 15 minutes.

The change in skill in the average TF2 player after it went free to play is so astronomical that it makes me think there should be a fee, too.
At the same time I can't imagine people who are that bad will stick with a game like DotA for too long, it would probably get insanely frustrating getting stomped that often.

I don't understand how this is such a prominent problem for people.

I mean, I get that bad people will be attracted to a free game, but if you don't like it, you can just find a few guys to team up with for sure.

I especially think it's unfair to act like these people are supposed to be on your level when they've probably never even heard of DotA, never mind played the original. Expecting them to be on par with you is a miscalculation on your part, yet they pay for it.

The whole thing is kinda a non-issue really, so long as the matchmaking works as it should.

Dunno if anyone's been watching the streams but the way the launcher is set-up is pretty fantastic.
You can select from a bunch of ongoing games to spectate, and you pop in like instantly. So you can queue up for a match and just watch some in-progress stuff while you wait, then it pulls you out when your match is ready.

Being forced to find a team of 4 other people to play with to get decent matches shouldn't be required. DotA is a game where a bad player hurts more than having no player at all. Unless Valve's skill ranking system is really well polished, I think people's worries are justified. If the servers are flooded with bad players, it will be near impossible to get a good game unless you pre-make your team, in which case you'll be stomping every game and that doesn't really count as a "good game" either.

Upon release I imagine Valve will do their best to sort out the different players. I know you pick your skill when you start, so hopefully their matchmaking can keep the groups separate.

As for the streams, I've only found one time where I opened one and it was a DotA 2 game (once it was HoN, other times it was just blank). And watching just one player is a lot less interesting than being behind the observer camera like we saw in the tournaments.

It's not really a bad thing, people just get high and mighty. Paying doesn't make you any better, nor does it prevent bad players from joining.

If what Ness said exists, does exist, then that's at least a step in the right direction.

Paying sure as hell will prevent more bad players from playing than making it free. It's not the long-term I'm worried about. It's the initial game. You're pretty much forced to play with your friends if you want to get anywhere ranked, unless you play a carry every game and your team isn't too terrible.

If the game is free, what you get are people that are bad at it, specifically joining a match with the intent of ruining it. I watched this happen plenty of times in DotA. At least with HoN (when people were paying to play), while there were plenty of bad players, the amount of leavers was drastically reduced.

And perhaps that's actually what I was trying to get at. It's not so much the bad players that bother as the people that leave the damn game 15 minutes in, or the people that want to concede after 10 minutes of barely losing.
