I'm thinking it's going to go back to the old-school style, 64-entrant, 1v1 (2v2?) day long matches.

We are probably looking at 64 different teams (128 characters). If that is the case, it is possible we could have 24 hour matches for the entire contest, but I suggested to SBAllen that there should be 12 hour matches for round 1 so we can finish the contest in 47 days. We might need to have 12 hour matches for round 1 only, because he needs to complete this contest before the Christmas break arrives.

It's also possible that we could have 32 different teams (64 characters), but that is the second most likely option. There is pretty much no chance at having 128 different teams (256 characters) because there would be too much fodder.
