The only way I have found to do it so far is by going to each individual's profile and clicking "remove friend."

You could just not defriend people.

Go to your friends list and click the little X next to their name.

I know but I am against the act of defriending people.

You clearly have never had someone who you hardly know clutter your wall with Farmville s***.

I'm just tired of Facebook's current newsfeed engine that shows every friends' every action. I use it primarily as an instant messaging service with my close friends, and I want to cut my 300+ friends down to around 50.

I know that sometime in the past year or two, I removed several hundred friends using a checklist, but I can't seem to find that now.

...but do I really have to remain "friends" with people whom I don't wish to be friends with?

I don't want to make a list of people whom I actually like; I just want to get rid of everyone else.

I know you USED to be able to just go to your friends list and click an x in the corner to delete them, but now you seem to have to go to their individual page to delete them. it is kind of annoying, i personally deleted lots of people for the same reasons you are talking about, and it took a long time. if there is a faster method i don't know about it.

I'm against defriending because when it happens to me it makes me wonder if those people dislike me. Then when I see them in public it's awkward.

Unless I see they have like, less than 200 friends. Then I don't take it personally.

Less than 200? I've never gone over 125 and I still feel like I need to weed people out. It's nothing personal, it's just that when I don't talk to someone in a couple of years, considering them a friend is a bit of a stretch. Most of the time it's someone that I played DnD or Magic with a couple of times or one of my friend's ex-girlfriends that hastily added me without actually having any sort of real "friendship" in the first place.

Anyone who I am deleting is not someone I would see in person on any sort of regular basis.

I've been deleting people for 20 minutes, and I'm just now into the "C's." The best way I've found to do it is to go to my profile, go into friends, and then click "Friend" next to that person and click "unfriend" from the popup menu.

You could make a new account and add the 50ish people you actually like and delete the old profile. That may be a little faster.

That X never allowed you to completely defriend them to my knowledge, it only let you block them from ever appearing in your news feed.

Which is functionally identical on your end as long as the person doesn't contact you in any way. They can still see all of your posts though.
