Liquor never helps me sleep, but a beer or two can. I'm assuming it's the hops, as there are all sort of sleep aid suggestions that call for hops. Granted, this method is only worthwhile if you don't have to get up too early.

I need to be up in less than 4 hours. Having to be up early is the only time I ever can't sleep.

Then I'd recommend chamomile tea if you happen to have any. Failing that, warm milk is the biggest cliche in the book but it has worked for me on occasion.

I like to take a shower both when I need to wake up and when I need to sleep. It just depends on how you use the sensation. If you go into it feeling relaxed and calm, it should be easy to get comfortable when you lay down.

i doubt you have any readily available sleep aids like melatonin or valerian root...but those would be viable options if you did have them.

failing that, you could give binaural beats a try...

http://gnaural.sourceforge.net/GnauralJavaApplet/

requires headphones. you can either run the default setting, or manually control it.
