OK before I begin, I consider myself a pretty skilled gamer. A jack-of-all trades to be more precise. I play RPGs, Action, Shooters, Platformers, *insert other genres* and I get used to things very quickly. I even used to play insanely difficult games like Battletoads, the NES Ninja Gaiden series, Castlevania, etc. I got all the way to Rat Race in Battletoads without cheating ^_^ for crying out loud but I've yet to solve the Katamari puzzle.

Recently I bought a copy of Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari. I've been trying to get into the game after reading very good reviews about it.
BUT after playing for a couple of hours. I realized I absolutely suck at this game. And so I thought okay maybe people need some getting used to it before they get good. That wasn't the case, the people over on the Katamari Damacy board are talking as if this game was a walk in the park whereas its been anything but a walk in the park for me.

So far my problem with the game is getting from 5cm to 10cm because it's quite difficult to pinpoint and roll over those small things. Once I get over 10cm, it gets easier.

I'm currently stuck at make a star 4 where you've to make 1m. I didn't lose in any of the levels before that but I've failed to make a 1m Star for over 10 tries now. I realized I was bad at the game the moment it started because I was barely able to make it through the first few levels (usually with seconds remaining).

Any tips on how to get better at the game KD Vets?

I'm posting here since the KD board is basically dead.

The trick is to use both joysticks, not just one.

Just practice at it. It's not very difficult, just requires some getting used to.

Getting used to the controls is the only thing there is to learning this game really.
Other than that just roll roll roll roll.

Also, make sure you do the "jump over the katamari" move by pushing both thumbsticks in at the same time. I do this almost constantly TBQH.

Although I've only played W<3K, the same general things should apply to the first.

Always use both analog sticks to turn. Clicking both sticks will instantly turn you around, use it often. You'll get a feel for what objects you can pick up at any time, so stick with it.

Thanks for the pointers.

Another question: What is up with the charge? What does it actually do?

I thought the charge was to roll over bigger things but that just failed miserably.

Charging is pointless and difficult to pull off. It can knock big stuff down, but it's not really worth it in most cases.

Charge is helpful if you're trying to get up a slope or something like that.

My immediate thought is that you are thinking too much about this and not feeling it out. Stop worrying about your "skills." This is a pitfall people fall into when they first play a game like this. Discard your preconceived notions about video games. In Katamari Damacy, you start at ground level like everyone else. Think as though you've never touched a video game before in your life.

With that out of the way, just roll towards stuff that looks smaller than you.

That's it.

If you're failing a stage, start plotting out a path in your head ahead of time. The stage isn't randomly generated; figure out where the small stuff is to start, and just keep the momentum rolling (pun intended).

Charging is the equivalent of running: though it won't help you pick up bigger things, a skilled player can charge around the level much more quickly.

Thanks for the pointers people. And yeah I got better and finished all but the constellation levels which I'll be getting into soon.

Anyways cheers! This has been an experience like none other.
