its for people with low self esteem and cant say no to people who offer them cigs in social situations.

Or they grew up in a family of smokers and its been "a part" of them their whole life. Those are the ones i feel sorry for.

So it'll be like 50% of the topics I make, cool.

I'm just seriously confused by this.

Unless you started at like 13 due to peer pressure or started doing it in the ****ing 60s and had no idea what the health risks were at the time and now you're too addicted to quit, I don't see why any adult smokes cigarettes.

How does an educated person say to themselves, "yes, I think today I'll become a smoker, that sounds like a great decision!"?

I'm legitimately baffled.

What is (in your estimation) the percentage of people who became addicted to cigarettes without making the choice to start in the first place?

I started when I was 12. It wasn't peer pressure. I heard cigarettes gave you a buzz, and I was like "Yo, I wanna be buzzed!"

Once I grew up and saw people start smoking, it was different. I'd say 70% were peer pressure.

The other 30% were people who were already ****ed up and lost the inhibition to say no. My friends who had never smoked before got drunk, took adderall, etc and lit up. They'd continue this for about year, then they'd start smoking when they were sober. Kind of a gradual thing.

No but if he played video games so much that he became addicted, I'd have to say that he chose (many times) to play video games.

You don't get hooked on just one cigarette.

You have to CHOOSE to smoke long enough to become addicted.

I've never been one to be overly critical of smokers either.

But recently one of my best friends started smoking. It started out as a "social" thing, he'd just have a cigarette now and then with a friend or whatever.

Then the other day I was with him and he bought a pack for himself.

I'm like "****ing really? Wow. You're really ****ing stupid."

and he answered me as if he was like, proud of the fact that he's now a smoker.

We had a talk about it last night because I was so confused as to why he decided to start, and he basically said other people "got him into it."

and I asked him why he ever thought trying it would be a good idea in the first place, and he flat out admitted he had no justifiable answer for that question.

He claims he's choosing to do it because he's "stressed" about work, school, and his home life.

He works less than 20 hours a week at a restaurant, is taking 3 (very easy) classes at a community college (that he's been attending for less than 2 weeks) and has a pretty decent and stable home life. So I kinda don't really buy that.

I made it clear that I was just voicing my concerns that I don't want him to become an addict and have this be a big problem, and he's all "I won't."

As if people just, you know, plan on becoming addicts.

So I basically begged him to quit now while he's only smoking 1-2 a day and let him know what a colossal idiot he's being and that he looks like a pathetic follower because he only started smoking because other people were doing it.

And today when we were hanging out he had to go out for a smoke break.

I'm really frustrated with the situation and I just do not get it.

Happens the same way people become addicted to anything else. You try it one, enjoy the high, and decide to keep doing it. If you're unlucky, you'll get addicted. And let me set this straight right now, you absolutely get a "high" from cigarettes that most people refer to as a buzz. The problem is that the buzz has diminishing returns and nearly all people that are actually addicted to nicotine no longer get this feeling...they have to smoke just to feel normal.

Like basically every other major drug, I decided to try smoking out when I was 18, mostly because I'm a cocky bastard and I feel that I'm "above" addiction (and it turns out I am). It's a great feeling and I can understand why a lot of people smoke, it just sucks that so many people aren't able to handle it in moderation. If you're only having a couple a week or so, you're not going to smell terrible all the time and I'm sure there wouldn't be some ridiculously high chance of adverse health problems either...but the risk of physical addiction just seems too high.

When I first started, I have since then quit, I used them as a stress relief since I couldn't drink at work. I was having a few extremely s***ty days spread out over a couple weeks, so I asked one of my coworkers for a cigarette, then it graduated to just when I was drinking, then it became smoking on my breaks at work. For me at least, I used to equate smoking to work, it didn't help that in the Marine Corps, pretty much the only way you can get a break is to smoke.

As I said before though, I have quit, and I am very happy of that fact. The hard part now is not regressing.

There was this guy I used to work with who would say, "Man, I drank so much this weekend..." or some variant of that pretty much every week and he never brought anything to eat for lunch because he didn't have a whole lot of money. Who needs priorities? He was actually a cool guy, but yeah... alcohol really isn't that exciting.

Or maybe it is and I'm just an anti-social loser. That's probably more true. Good thing I prefer it that way.

And most people that drink every weekend don't "need" to do that either... It's about making the most of the situation. If you're going to a bar or a sporting event and you KNOW that being drunk will make the night more interesting, then it makes sense to drink.

Say you have a favorite burger and it tastes really awesome with cheese. Sure you could make it without cheese and it would still taste great, but why not just add the cheese and make it the best burger ever?

I don't really believe in doing any drug to make a boring situation more interesting, but if I'm going to do something that I know is going to be awesome, I'm going to try to make it as awesome as possible. That said, there are very few situations where being sober ISN'T the most fun for me... But I'm not going to judge others for doing what makes them happy.

I wish this was true.

Whether or not they are chemically dependent will obviously just depend on the person but waaaaaay too many people I knew in college and even now that I'm out of college THINK they need to drink to have fun which makes it essentially the same.

Most of them will whine if there is no drinking and then go find a place to drink.

pretty much this. There will be a lot of people who argue about this, but out of college aged people, plenty are obsessed with needing some drinks wherever they go. With my social circle its more of an issue with marijuana, but whatever. Needing either to have a fun time kinda annoys me. It would be be like me needing to have video games with my friends to have a fun time, or for me to need to be playing basketball to have a fun time. Kinda annoying.

That's kinda ****ty. I'm friends with a few people that could be called excessive drinkers, but even they can always have fun on a sober night just hanging out. Although the bigger problem with them now would probably be not smoking weed in those same situations. But as I said before, I can't really blame them... good weed will indeed make most things better.

My mission was to try pretty much every drug (save the obvious ones) to see what I could learn from them. I feel like I can understand why people choose to do different things and I have no problem with it. While I rarely drink or smoke anymore, I can't get annoyed by people who choose to do it. It's fun for them. It makes life more enjoyable, and there is nothing wrong with that.
