The Rules:

-Matches will last exactly 24 hours. Votes after that much time has elapsed will not be counted, even if a new topic hasn't gone up yet.
-This is a contest to determine which character is the most *powerful*. Vote only for the character you think would win in a fight, not the one who's funnier, cooler, or sexier. If you don't do that I can't count your vote.
-BOLD YOUR VOTE. Unbolded votes will NOT be counted.
-Rallying is allowed. Alts are not.
-Fights will take place in a neutral terrain. This does not necessarily mean a *featureless* terrain: assume that both characters will have a chance to use all of their skills to the fullest here, barring setting-specific abilities and anything that requires the presence of multiple enemies (but see below).
-Characters start the fight alone. They don't bring allies with them, like Kerrigan and the Zerg Swarm for instance. Summons are allowed though, provided they're brought once combat has started.
-Fighters retain their usual personalities. They won't fight to kill unless that's their MO, and won't spam their best attacks to win unless, again, that's how they act in their original media.
-Similarly, fighters are unaware of their opponents capabilities at the start of the fight unless their powers facilitate them information (like knowing all there is to know in the universe - this would include who the opponent is and what he can do, as well as weaknesses)
-You don't have to justify your vote, but it helps. If you feel like you can add something to the debate, go right ahead!
-Seriously, BOLD THE VOTE. So important it bears repeating.
-Bracket Link, for viewing past results and future matches:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?&tid=408528&tclass=

Past Results:
Well, that was anticlimatic! In the tiebreaker, Lelouch simply curbstomped Smith, leaving no doubts as to the winner of the match. Votals: 19-8

(1) Akemi Homura
external image
From Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Akemi Homura is a time traveling mage who wields a vast arsenal of magically enhanced weapons. These range from pistols and machineguns to beams and bunker-busting missiles. Her magical ability is the power to manipulate exactly a month's worth of time, which she can revert after that much time has passed. She can also stop time, though anyone she touches will not be affected by the time stop. Additionally, she later gains the ability to manifest massive angelic wings, and wield a bow that fires powerful energy shots.

vs.

(8) Ness
external image
From Earthbound, Ness is an unassuming young boy who becomes savior of the world. He uses powerful psychic attacls to fight, as well as melee attacks with his trusty baseball bat and a variety of other childhood items such as yo-yos.

His moves include PSI Flash, which causes strange feelings of sadness or paralysis; PSI Rockin’, a powerful offensive spell; PSI Lifeup and Healing, which cure wounds and status ailments; Shield, which reduces the damage taken by one-half and can also return that other half back to the enemy; and Paralysis and Hypnosis, which can bring enemies to sleep or paralyze them. Ness can also teleport over certain distances and gets a boost in strength from being powered by the energy of the entire planet after conquering his inner demons, making him far overshadow his allies.

Homura's normal method of attack is this: Freeze time. Fire a barrage of guns at the opponent. The bullets stay frozen in midair until she unfreezes time, at which point the opponent is bombarded.

Leaning toward Ness not surviving that.

I wouldn't really consider Ness to be a remarkably powerful hero. He never has any demonstrations of massive amounts of power besides whacking enemies with baseball bats until they die.

Depending how you interpret game mechanics, he's durable as hell though. Rolling HP meters means any lethal attack still leaves him alive for at least 15-30 seconds during which he can heal himself as if he was untouched.

One of them is "time freezes". The other one is "I move faster". Homura does the latter.

But yeah, this is basically a trick battle - on one hand Ness has Psiskills which I don't think Akemi would be equipped to resist. On the other hand bullets would kill Ness too. Ness does have extra speed from Psi Tele Alpha, so that's something to keep in mind, as is the regenerative effect of Lifeup.

Also, Ness is no joke among street-levelers. Take a look at this stuff:

Both abilities are among his weaker options and Psi Rockin' isn't demonstrated. He certainly has the offensive firepower to win this if he survives the first freeze.

I don't think you can really consider this as mobility. It's used for transversing distances between towns and can't be used for any precise movements.

I dunno anything about Akemi's durability. PSI Flash can flat-out kill targets (>70% success on targets who aren't immune I think) so it's possible that could end things instantly. Paralysis and Hypnosis are very accurate if the target isn't immune (I think it's >90%), but I dunno how these game mechanics-y things translate into this. If you allow rolling HP then Ness can launch at least one (probably two) offensive spells off before he needs to heal himself after he receives lethal damage.

But Ness doesn't need to be precise. He just needs to get the hell out of the way. >_>

And it's not like it isn't cancelable, either.

The Homura seen in the series is mostly very professional. She's been through several time loops and her failure has made her more determined and efficient.

No, Homura does the former.

Homura is cold, efficient, and focused. If she knows that she's facing a hostile opponent that she needs to defeat, I don't think she hesitates.

Homura probably blows him up within the first second of the fight or something. I mean, that's fastish, but there's only one of it at a time and it's not that fast. Homura can stop time, pull out a rocket launcher and send several of them at him at once, and then unfreeze it and watch the fireworks.

But yeaah, I don't see Ness really doing anything here. Unless Homura is fragile enough where Shield's reflection damage kills her which is actually a possibility with how durable Ness is.

hard to tell. only enemy that ever gives her trouble after she's a noob (which is a good thousand+ times before we first see her anyway) is the same enemy she's trying to beat that won't go down despite being firebombed, hit with a couple hunred RPGs, a train, battleships shooting missiles at it, and a bunch of other crap i don't remember. and is pretty much the strongest thing in the series for most of it. only things stronger are a haxed up Madoka, witch Madoka, and... probably herself at the end heat of the universe. think somewhere in there it threw a skyscraper at her. but yeah, should be tanky. you don't fight berserker anime openings from another universe without being durable.

not that any of that matters since really, time stop and blast it to high hell is her go-to start and finish and ness is pretty much screwed. homura.

Earthbound's HP meter looks like a slot machine. When you get damaged, the reels of your HP have to roll down from whatever your HP was to whatever it is after the attack. So if you have 900 HP and receive 1000000 damage, you still have to wait for your HP to roll down and you're effectively invincible during this time frame. Your HP is rolling toward zero, but it isn't there yet, so you don't die. Since Ness has a full HP cure, you can argue that he can abuse this to great effect.

But that's stupid. Homura.

Akemi Homura.

*MOTHER 3 SPOILERS LATER IN POST*

The arguments for Ness are always, always really horrible and rely on contrived interpretation of gameplay mechanics to an absolutely stupid degree. I'd sooner believe Loto from Dragon Quest 3 is a godly being for killing Zoma (because that's so impressive, right?).

But just to shut it down: Ness has basically no plot showings, and Giygas is completely ??? and is killed in a way that involves absolutely no input on Ness's part or anyone's actual power.

Later in Mother 3, which is without a doubt part of the same world (they share the same exact world, including some major characters), both Lucas and Claus display the same types of powers as Ness, including PK Love/Rockin. Without a doubt, Flint in scripted events survives at least two PK Love Omega's, and he's a completely normal human being. Then, Claus dies to a PSI Lightning Omega from himself without notable damage done beforehand. PSI characters in this game are not super durable, not super powerful, and they can't even take what they can dish out.
