I was a little late getting into gaming. The SNES was my first console, and I missed out on the NES entirely until finally picking one up around the time I started college.

Whenever I mention that I like a game on the NES more than its SNES sequel (like how I prefer Castlevania III to Super Castlevania IV or the original Legend of Zelda to A Link to the Past), people say I'm just blinded by nostalgia. But shouldn't nostalgia favor the SNES games I played as a child over the NES games I didn't play until I was an adult?

Does this happen to anyone else here? Do you ever see or hear people insisting that the only reason anyone likes a certain game more than a more modern one is because of nostalgia when you only recently played it and genuinely enjoyed it more?

I didn't play FF7 until two or three years ago and thought it was pretty great at the time, and people threw around the nostalgia card like it was impossible to like the game otherwise.. Haven't thought about comparing it to the excellent other RPG's I've been playing recently like Breath of Fire 4, though... >_>

A friend mentioned earlier today that I only like FF8 so much because of nostalgia. Considering how I'm currently in the middle of my first playthrough that's...probably not true.

Oh, I'm well aware that tons of people love throwing around the nostalgia card. I was specifically referring to examples like agesboy's and Haguile's, where the nostalgia card gets played even though it would make no sense for nostalgia to be involved.

Sort of a reverse example:

Since I grew up during a time when all SNES-owners were honor-bound to hate Sega, I didn't own a Sega console until the Dreamcast.

I've heard fans of the 3D Sonic games (particularly the early ones) defend them by insisting that everyone who doesn't like them is just high on nostalgia for the Genesis games. I didn't play the Genesis games until years after playing the two Adventure games, and even without the comparison I thought the latter were mediocre at best and that the former were pretty good (though the only one I thought was truly stellar was Sonic 3 & Knuckles).

constantly, especially on the internet. if you like anything that came out less than five years ago, you have rose tinted nostalgia goggles.

The nostalgia card gets thrown around like crazy here when you say you prefer the Star Wars OT to the PT. Why people get so defensive over the PT is completely beyond me, as they're some of the worst movies to have ever been made.

sonic is a great example btw, I literally didn't play any of the genesis games until they were released as a gamecube collection, I played sonic adventure years before that. 3D sonic is just objectively terrible and worse than the genesis games

Um, I have literally never seen that happen on B8, pretty sure we almost unanimously prefer the OT

You apparently haven't seen many movies, then.

The nostalgia card is a pretty good weapon against many on b8 because b8 is living in the 90s. We have people here thinking gaming died at the beginning of this current generation. Just take a look at LW, or that Demon Hunter guy.

Not at all, there's plenty of people here who actually put some of the PT over some of the OT.

uh, there are tons of great games being released right now, wtf are you talking about? just because I bash the current state of certain japanese developers like nintendo, sega, and square, which are all very clearly past their prime, does not mean that I have a problem with the current state of GAMING. the world is bigger than nintendo, as much as board 8 struggles with that notion

it gets thrown around a lot because it's also the reason a lot of people have preferences on things, and people like having actual reasons that follow logic. if you were to tell me that you prefer RBY over the last 2 gens of Pokemon, i'd absolutely say it's nostalgia talking because it's pretty bad now. some games don't really have to suffer much from this, and really a lot of SNES/Genesis and on games don't suffer a lot from this either because despite being old, their mechanics have still shined through and are perfectly fine. NES had major hardware limits, as did the GB line up to the GBA. at that point, it wasn't impossible anymore to run games like Contra 3, Lufia II, Phantasy Star IV, etc. not to say you won't find a game or two from the limited systems that's good, but they're extremely rare.

PS1 era can stand on its own just fine. it won't match graphically obviously, but story, gameplay, graphic style, music, the way things mix togehter - all that can last.

but it does play a lot of factors to a lot of people (especially those who think gaming is dying or somehow inferior overall, despite ignoring the facts that it's bigger than ever financially, in volume, and diversity), so it gets overused.
