Yeah, DK is has the most night oriented trends out of any Nintendo character. This means that DK's day vote is one of the worst day votes out of any Nintendo character.

Nah, Saren is a nothing and hurts that pairing. Dracula certainly doesn't do that. And even in a day match, I'd probably still take Alucard over Shep. I think Alucard can break 40% on Pikachu in a day match.

Looking at some past matches, Altair seems to be just "average" in Europe and Asia. He's not a god killer in Europe and Asia.

I think you certainly can make an argument for DK, perhaps they're even equal in strength. If these were two other characters I would call it a toss-up, but this is DK, choke artist number one.

The mean green can plausibly power Waluigi to three wins. I can not even measure the glory (although losing Ryu and Ken like that would be sad). Three wins outright would give Waluigi more wins than Zack Fair, Commander Shepard, Riku, and Gordon Freeman, among others.

One thing I've been thinking about in the DK match is if King K. Rool will bring in some of Donkey Kong Country's strength.

I dunno how to explain it. I guess what I'm trying to say is, will DK get votes he wouldn't otherwise get if you remind voters of DKC as opposed to just voting DK?

I think if any character has "cool" memorable moments with their particular rival, then I think they could potentially get a "nostalgia" boost from the "Oh yeah, I remember when..." stuff, especially if they get a picture depicting such a moment.

K. Rool has some pretty good boss fights in the series.

See, I don't agree with that.

I'd vote Ezio over DK in a heartbeat, but I'll be voting for DK/K. Rool for that match because Ezio/Rodrigo is not so good and I have good DKC memories.

One thing I'll praise about this contest: it may actually get voters to consider the characters and games (although obviously with more emphasis on the characters). That's interesting.

There will be a % of voters for whom the "rivalry" aspect is important. The question is how significant that % is.

It's not about thinking which rivalry is better; at least in my case. It's more about being reminded of DKC to make DK stronger.

I guess it's just another way to say "It's a more iconic rivarly."

I think the rivalry aspect could mean a lot. I wouldn't fault people for taking the MK ninjas over X/Zero or even Ryu/Ken over the dreaded Samus. I think just the title "Game of the Decade" changed the way some people voted, so something like this, which actively works to make voters consider more than just one entity before voting, could have even bigger changes.

I don't think DK gets much strength from DKC at all....the vast majority of it probably comes from his presence in the Mario side-games and Smash.

They all look great. The only one I think might hurt the entrants a smidgen is Subz/Scorp because their classic MK look is probably their strongest. Menji made an excellent pic using their classic models.

Also, Classic Jill > RE5 Jill, but you're going for a MvC3 pic, so it probably wouldn't fit.

I tried using the concept art from MK9 which was updated versions of their classic outfits (like an amalgam of MK1-3)

I'm hoping people just see them and go "oh hey blue ninja and yellow ninja" and recognize them right off. I think MK9 boosted them up a lot, and there's enouh positive buzz around them that they won't have to rely on looking nostalgic

I agree. I don't think they'll need "picture help" until X/Zero, which may be beyond their reach anyway. Maybe I just prefer their classic look. >_>

By the way, where the HELL have the X/Zero pictures been? I thought that would be the single most popular pairing for picsmiths. I didn't think I'd even have time to consider a pic before a half dozen were already made.

I've been making these pics since the first year we could and there has ALWAYS been a shortage of X and Zero pics.

seriously google that s*** up. It's so hard to find good X pics that are good quality. Zero too. So matching them is a double asspain. I know a lot of people hate rendering Zero's sword because it's a light blue/white, too, so he may be causing the problem in general as nobody but me seems to have the patience to hand render things

I'm taking DK since he comes from an older Nintendo-series and DKCR was a recent well-received game for him, but counting on K. Rool to add much will be a mistake:

He ended up between Andross and King Dedede, two characters who have sucked before here (notice Fox and Kirby found better rivals, too). Granted, SFF-city in that poll, but we've also seen the one character who should be strong because of DKC fail hard: Diddy Kong. Red sox already pointed out the series isn't even very strong here as well, so that's a rivalry that will have difficulty working well; if the rivalry didn't span several games during Nintendo's hey-day, I wouldn't respect it at all.

Ezio's rivalry has a real shot, but it doesn't seem like Rodrigo will be doing him many favors either.

Looking at the bracket from round 3 onwards ... I don't imagine that much variation between guru contestants. I think there will be so much overlap many folks will be eliminated because they guessed wrong on too many DK - Ezio, Ramza - Nightmare matches.

I thought Ramza > Nightmare was blatantly obvious.

FFT is lightyears ahead of anything Soulcaibur in strength so...oh wait, Ramza lost to a WoW boss a few years ago and is projected to be held under 60% by Wander (although after what SOTC did in GOTD, perhaps that isn't so bad!).

I'm banking on fighting game rivalries bombing and Squaresoft rivalries winning big in this contest though. All the Squaresoft rivalries in this bracket aside from Crono/Lavos and Zidane/Kuja seem like a good deal more than mere hero-villain relationships though.

I'm also thinking of allowing bets during a match- the odds would be updated after the freeze, the 1 AM update, the 3 AM update, the 11 AM update, the 8 PM update, and the 11 PM update, and you would be allowed to make a new bet after the odds were updated until the next update. No bets between the beginning of the match until the first odds update of course.

I think this could be a good idea, largely because the spread betting format as-is was basically like a less-specific Oracle contest. The only downside is if it becomes too easy to predict straight-up winners in this contest, then it could get a bit boring, but every contest has given us something unexpected and I see no reason for that to change now.
