Nah. It's weird, because I'd definitely take Luigi straight-up over either of those characters, but Red/Blue probably get a "contest boost" and Waluigi probably gets antivoted a bit.

I would actually argue otherwise, although I had a feeling that I'd be unsuccessful in convincing enough people of this to make a difference. Luigi's lone solo outing thus far (not counting a certain edutainment game) was Luigi's Mansion, and then when he was added into the DS remake of Super Mario 64, he was held prisoner by King Boo in Big Boo's Haunt. His added characterization, when Nintendo decided to give him his own personality separate from Mario's, also has him as somewhat of a coward. I really don't think it's too much of a stretch to call King Boo Luigi's main "rival" (villain), especially with it looking like he might be the final boss again in Luigi's Mansion 2.

But no, instead we get Luigi/Waluigi.

I don't think (most) people are overselling them. Pokemon fans just have a fairly good grasp of their character's popularity. Just look at last year:

Mega Man X (197, 86%)
Red (29, 13%)

No one took Red>X seriously, and that includes the people who picked it. Red/Blue>Luigi/Waluigi probably ends up as the favorite in the Guru. At least I think it does.

well most low strength characters people just don't care about or don't know. like i don't think people are anti-voting Sonic cause of Robotnik, it just wouldn't be as well-liked a pair as one with Knux.

So it seems. To be honest I haven't got this unshakeable faith in R/B but I'm relatively confident in them going far. It's just such a rivalry...

I wonder how strong they would be if it was Pkmn trainer Ash vs. Pkmn trainer Gary.

Why would Robotnik be anti-voted? People like him. It's a legitimate rivalry. Luigi/Waluigi is just stupid.

that's what i'm saying. Robotnik is pretty unpopular but wouldn't cause the pair to be anti-voted like Waluigi would.

Sonic/Robotnik is a legit, respected rivalry. Sonic/Knuckles would do better among old school fans of the series because of S3&K and Knuckles is more well liked than Robotnik, but it shouldn't be a huge difference.

Although it's not like Sonic/Robotnik is really in a position to where it'll matter which one we ended up with. I don't think Kirby/Meta Knight threaten them there.

I don't think Robotnik is unpopular. He's not a beloved character or anything, but no one outright dislikes him. He makes a good antagonist for Sonic.

I think Sonic/Robotnik will be in no danger of losing to Kirby/Meta Knight. We don't know how the voters will treat this contest when they vote. If they take the actual rivalries seriously, that could hurt Kirby/Meta Knight. Keep in mind that most of Kirby's and Meta Knight's strength comes from the Smash games and not the Kirby games. There is no rivalry between Kirby and Meta Knight in the Smash games, so voters who are voting based on the rivalry have to consider the Kirby games instead. GameFAQs doesn't really care about the Kirby games. See these 2 matches:

There might have been some SFF, but I don't think taking out Super Mario 64 and replacing it with a different game would change how Kirby Super Star finishes in the match.

you're talking actual Pokemon - this is human Pokemon characters. I do think Red/Blue win here but there have been some particularly crazy picks from the Pokemon fans (like Red/Blue to the semifinal)

anyway, I'm not calling out Pokemon fans. what Leon is saying is that Pokemon fans are more likely to inflate Pokemon characters as being really strong. that's been the case in the past and leads to people not feeling too confident in it.

While that's true, there's also the problem of non-Pokemon fans not knowing anything about the Red/Blue rivalry. I remember Leon telling me last night that he had no idea that people even cared about it. There's a balance to be had between that and taking Red/Blue to the semis, but I'm not sure what it is.

yeah, same. I get that Red/Blue is kind of the definition of 'rival' since that's how they're referred to, but at the same time, I don't think that means a whole lot. tough to say.

Well, I had the same issue last year with finding it curious people actually cared about Red as an individual.

How much of this is actually the game and how much of this is the cartoon? Because I legitimately don't know.

The cartoon is a factor. Everyone equates the rival to Gary Oak. You'll get people making the distinction between Ash and Red, but the rival is universal, and that help.

I ended up taking Red/Blue to lose, but they could get to Mario and it wouldn't surprise me at all. Red sucked on his own, but people could view this as a Pokemon Red/Pokemon Blue thing which is what scares me.
