I accept that it's a real rivalry in game (I've never played them, but people seem pretty adamant about this point), but I have a hard time believing anyone cares. Aren't you only interested in collecting the pokemon themselves?

There's next to no chance they get past Luigi/Waluigi. Red flopped pretty damn hard last year, even if placement in a rivalry somehow improves him a lot, it's very unlikely that it's enough to get him past something with legit strength like Luigi/Waluigi.
If they manage to get to the 3rd round it'll be partially because of Luigi/Waluigi being weak and Ryu/Ken will get past the trainers without much trouble.
I'm starting to think this is like a light version of Mario vs. Samus. People too hung up on Red's past performances to see the logic of the matter. I'm really surprised the debate is their match vs. Luigi/Waluigi.
Could be me with the crazy logic though! Just don't get this attitude that they'll be weak or whatever. For reference I never put much stock in Red, iirc, but Red/Blue is going to be strong.

The only way I could see them having any significant strength is if they used a pic of Ash/whatever the villains name from the anime is. But I doubt Bacon would accept those, leaving only the game pictures, which is why Red ended up being weak last contest.
Charizard and Blastoise would win the division, or at the very least, they'd give Ryu and Ken the fight of their lives.
The trainers, though? Unless they get an amazing match pic that features Charizard and Blastoise, I doubt they're getting past Luigi/Waluigi, let alone the SF duo.
Even if they have it, they might not be able to use it outside of battle.

Blue in some official art still looks like Gary. I doubt Allen would use an anime pic but the official art might just do the trick.
Allen may end up using sprites though, which would be a bit rubbish.
Charizard/Blastoise > Red/Blue and Luigi/Waluigi > Red/Blue both weird me out. I mean, I could see either, but both just feel so fundamentally wrong. Red/Blue is a way better rivalry, and I think it'll get votes that Red alone could never dream of. I don't give a **** about Red but to me at least, Red/Blue represents Pokemon, which makes it worth supporting, and I bet a lot of people think like me.
