Kind of excited! It's not every day you get to start a Final Fantasy game for the first time.

FF12 was kind of a letdown, hopefully this is a return to form!

I never managed to get more than halfway through FF12, but I did finish FF13. So... I guess you could say it's a better game. But I wouldn't expect a whole hell of a lot.

That said, since I have the house to myself for a week, I'm thinking of going back and trying to beat FF12.

They're not even remotely similar in any way.

I kinda feel bad that I'll never get the platinum... but I never plat games I actually like playing, so it really shouldn't be that big of a deal.

FF12 is great if you are in for the gameplay rather than the story. The last few story dungeons are long and challenging, and the endgame sidequests even more so.

I recommend not playing it. It's pretty awful. I hated 12 too, and then 13 came out and 12 didn't seem to so bad.

A whole game like Chapter 11 would be amazing -- maybe XIII-2 will aspire to be that.

I'm yet another person who couldn't get into 12 but enjoyed 13. I don't think they're especially similar.

Hope you have fun with the game! I'm a pretty big fan but one's enjoyment of the game does depend what one looks for in RPGs.

13 felt like one big apology for 12. It wound up being just as bad for all the opposite reasons.

13-2 is looking like one big apology for 13.

FFXII couldn't be more different from FFXIII. Liking one won't have an impact on liking the other.

Personally, XII is my second favorite in the main series and XIII is pretty much middle of the pack.

But I love FFXIII, so I hope you enjoy it!

XIII is in the middle of the pack for me as well, but that still means I like it A LOT. I kept saying it when it was new, but it honestly felt like that game was tailor-made for me, personally. I love linearity in jRPGs and the battle system was fast paced and exciting. What I loved about the battles in XII was that they went by quickly with a really small amount of input (which became ZERO input by the end of the game). In XIII the battles were really quick, but they made you stay on your toes as well. I can actually say that grinding was fun in both games.

The story was a bit lacking for me... interesting world, but they put far too much information in the codex, and not nearly enough in the cutscenes. With the storage available in this gen... there is really no excuse for that. Characters were cool as well. Lightning is probably me second favourite lead in the series after Squall, and I love the dynamics between the characters. I won't say any more because it's basically all spoilers... but I love the fact that you're not just a group of friends all traveling together to save the world... the relationships between the members of your party are actually quite complicated and extremely unique for a Final Fantasy game.

Enjoy the story while you can. While it starts out pretty good, it gets ridiculously stupid in the last third of the game.

All the complaints about linearity aside, I think one of the biggest problems with FF13 is the lack of a major villain for most of the game's duration. For those of you who've beat the game, we all know who the actual "villain" is, but the majority of the game goes on with the characters talking among themselves, and no real antagonist to fuel the conflict. The characters are completely removed from any of the political or social issues going on in the world since they're on the run for the entire game, so until the last 1/3 of the game or so, all the conflict comes from the characters whining to each other about their pasts.

Good cast when divided. Mediocre cast when together. Devolved gambits battle system.

And "ok" game all in all.

I would have enjoyed the story more if the whole party had better interactions than:

"wait what are we supposed to do now?"
"lol FIGHT OUR DESTINY"
"and what is that?"
"lol who knows lets just do it"
"SERAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH"

Sounds about right. In most of the FF games, you always got the sense that, even if the characters you're playing are exceptional, they're just people in a world of people that have their own wants and needs. On the other hand, FF13 makes you feel like that handful of characters are the only ones in the world that actually matter, and relegate every other character to support roles that are meant to make the main characters' lives easier.
